'A sacred right
The west was taken in by the Zionist propaganda for several decades, but what is more natural than a Palestinian returning home?

Why should I, a Jew from north London, be permitted to take up Israeli citizenship, when that right is denied to a Palestinian who languishes in a refugee camp in Lebanon? Especially when I acknowledge that a large majority of those that left in 1948 were ethnically cleansed by Israeli forces.
Those are the words of Alex Stein, writing for Comment is free last week. A commendable admission of injustice to Palestinians, you would say. But then he derives conclusions that are contrary to this premise; that the right of a Palestinian to return to his home is neither sacred, legal nor possible.
This split-personality theme has been infamously adopted by Benny Morris who pored over hundreds of declassified Israeli files. Morris confirmed in minute detail that, in 1948, Israeli invasion forces committed massacres, expelled Palestinians, destroyed their villages, looted their property, burnt their crops, poisoned their wells and shot on the spot any Palestinian who tried to return to his home. Referring to the remaining minority, Morris then solemnly declared that he was sorry that Ben Gurion "did not finish the job".
Both Alex Stein and Benny Morris escape from the fact, slowly seeping into the western conscience, that Palestinians were - and are today - subject to the most massive, comprehensive, meticulously planned and executed and continuous ethnic cleansing operation in modern history. This has long been denied by Israeli historians. A notable exception is a brave and honest Israeli historian, Ilan Pappe.
The sensation created by Benny Morris's revelation about al-Nakba, grudgingly accepted by some Jews, is a stark measure of how the west was taken in by the Zionist propaganda for several decades. The Palestinians do not know whether to laugh or cry, for the "revelations" are only some of what they have been saying all along since 1948. Hundreds of thousands of refugees gave graphic details of their plight but these were dismissed by the Zionist Europeans as "a figment of oriental imagination" until an Israeli historian found damning evidence in Israeli files.
Facts have a way of surfacing. The facts, documented on maps and records, show that in 1948 Israelis depopulated the Palestinian inhabitants of 675 towns and villages, that their land represents 93% of Israel's area; that half of all the refugees have been expelled in the last six weeks of the British Mandate, before the state of Israel was declared and before any Arab regular soldier set foot on Palestine to save its people from the invasion of Jewish European immigrants who had just waded into their shores to build Israel on the ruins of Palestine.'

De pro-Israel lobby in Nederland, met voorop de betaalde propagandisten van het CIDI, zouden zich de volgende vraag eens moeten stellen: 'Why should I, a Jew from the Netherlands, be permitted to take up Israeli citizenship, when that right is denied to a Palestinian who languishes in a refugee camp in Lebanon? Het is een morele vraag die vroeg of laat iedere pro-Israel lobbyist zichzelf zal moeten stellen. Daar ontkomen ze niet aan. En hoe sneller ze zichzelf deze vraag stellen, des te sneller kan aan het leed en het onrecht van de Palestijnen een eind komen.

Yet some writers have raised a number of important questions about the nature of US democracy.For example, why is it that only those from wealthy backgrounds are able to become presidential candidates?Why is it that the US not only champions democracy but champions extreme individualism and unbridled capitalism and has strongly opposed any form of socialism (which might spread the benefits of development more widely among people)?Why is it that America's wealthy elites are able to exert such strong influence on political elections and economic decisions?Alesina and Glaeser in their book Fighting Poverty in the US and Europe (2004) point out that all the American political institutions are ultimately the product of an 18th Century Constitution which was crafted by a minority of white and wealthy men of property determined to stop the State from expropriating their wealth and to limit the amount of redistribution the poor could demand of the rich.Hence, the concerns of the rich are strongly protected and the US has a bias against welfare for the poor and redistribution of wealth. Comparing the US and Europe they note:"Not only does government spending in the Europe favour the poor much more than in the United States, but government tax policy as well is much more distributive. Income tax rates are more progressive than in the United States."'

The common soldier, the Poor Bloody Infantry, the GI Joe of Agincourt, survives Henry IV, only to end up on the end of a rope after he's avoided filling up the breach at Harfleur with his corpse. Henry V is his undoing - in every sense of the word - when he robs a French church. He must be executed, hanged, "pour encourager les autres". "Bardolph," laments his friend Pistol to Fluellen, "a soldier firm and sound of heart, /...hanged must a' be /A damned death! "Let gallows gape for dog, let man go free, / And let not hemp his wind-pipe suffocate: / But Exeter hath given the doom of death... / Therefore go speak, the duke will hear thy voice; / And let not Bardolph's vital thread be cut... / Speak, captain, for his life..."How many such military executions have been recorded in the past 30 years of Middle East history? The effect of depleted uranium, used by America in the Gulf War, is never referred to. Radiation levels in Iraq are appallingly high. Babies are born with no brain, no eyes, no genitals. Where they do have ears, mouths or rectums, all that issues from these orifices is blood. The two hundred thousand deaths in East Timor in 1975 brought about by the Indonesian government but inspired and supported by the United States are never referred to. The half a million deaths in Guatemala, Chile, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Uruguay, Argentina and Haiti, in actions supported and subsidised by the United States are never referred to. The millions of deaths in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia are no longer referred to. The desperate plight of the Palestinian people, the central factor in world unrest, is hardly referred to.'

Trouw, Misschien Wel 26

De Volkskrant bericht:

'Vakbond wil onderzoek naar wanbeleid uitgever PCM.

AMSTERDAM - De journalistenbond NVJ gaat onderzoeken of er sprake is van wanbeleid bij PCM Uitgevers. Dat hebben de bond en de kranten van PCM – de Volkskrant, NRC Handelsblad, Trouw en het AD - vrijdagmiddag besloten. Als eerste stap gaat de NVJ vragen stellen aan de raad van bestuur, de raad van commissarissen en de centrale ondernemingsraad van PCM, omdat er volgens de bond ‘gegronde redenen zijn om te twijfelen aan de juistheid van het gevoerde beleid...
Actie tegen graaien
De PCM-kranten willen actie tegen het ‘graaien’ door de top van het uitgeversbedrijf. De directe aanleiding voor de onrust is de twee miljoen euro die PCM-bestuurder Philip Alberdingk Thijm bij zijn gedwongen vertrek meekrijgt. Dat bedrag bestaat voor ongeveer de helft uit de twee jaarsalarissen plus premies die hij contractueel meekrijgt. De andere helft is de uitkering van het aandelenplan voor het management van PCM, dat bij de komst van het Britse opkoopfonds Apax in 2004 is afgesproken.'

Vakbond_wil_onderzoek_naar_wanbeleid_uitgever_PCM

Misschien moet de uitgever Wouter van der Meulen van Trouw zich meer concentreren op de zelfverrijking van zijn collega-bestuurders dan mij lastig vallen met een email waarin hij mij in feite verbiedt om gedocumenteerd kritiek te leveren op de journalistieke mores van Trouw. Van mijn kritiek kan Trouw alleen maar beter worden, terwijl dat 'graaien' de belangen van Trouw schaadt. Wouter van der Meulen zit er toch juist om de financiele belangen van Trouw te behartigen, nietwaar. Het journalistieke belang van de krant, moet hij maar aan vakmensen overlaten. En nu we het er toch over hebben, zou ik van de redactie graag willen weten waarom dit bericht niet prominent op de voorpagina van de Trouw-website staat? Maar wel dit bericht:
'Bos daagt Weekend voor rechter (laatste nieuws) Minister Wouter Bos (Financiën) daagt het weekblad Weekend voor de rechter, omdat het foto's van hem en zijn kinderen heeft gepubliceerd.' Is it bericht over Weekend nu relevanter voor de Trouw-lezer dan het bericht over het zakkenvullen bij PCM-uitgevers? Zo ja, in welk opzicht?

Eric O. stapt naar de rechter. Volgens zijn advocaat Geert Jan Knoops wil de sergeant-majoor eerherstel en een schadevergoeding van de staat. Informatie van de marechaussee over een missie in Bosnië had nooit bij het Openbaar Ministerie (OM) terecht mogen komen.
Tijdens een geheime operatie in Bosnië in 1997 schakelde Eric O., die door het OM werd beschuldigd van het onopzettelijk doodschieten van een plunderaar in irak en door de rechter is vrijgesproken, een van oorlogsmisdaden verdachte Kroaat uit.
Schietgraag Het OM gebruikte dat incident in de rechtszaal tegen de marinier om hem af te schilderen als schietgraag. Hoewel de rechter hem tot twee keer toe vrijsprak, hebben het OM noch de Marechaussee hun fout publiekelijk willen erkennen (lees ook Gerechtshof spreekt marinier Eric O. vrij).
In het tv-programma Netwerk zei Knoops dat O. deze maand 400.000 euro schadevergoeding en eerherstel zal eisen. De informatie over de geheime missie in Bosnië had niet in de openbaarheid mogen komen. De reputatie van O., die zich wel aan zijn geheimhoudingsplicht houdt, is nu geschaad.
Eerder zond Netwerk een reconstructie uit van de missie in Bosnië. Generaal-majoor Patrick Cammaert zei in die uitzending dat O. publiekelijk eerherstel verdient (lees ook Berlijn: Cammaert niet berispt om Eric O.).'

Vandaag bericht de Volkskrant:
'Valse verklaringen in zaak-Eric O.

DEN HAAG - Nederlandse mariniers hebben onder dwang valse verklaringen afgelegd over het optreden van Eric O., de sergeant-majoor die tijdens een vredesmissie in Irak in 2003 een plunderaar zou hebben doodgeschoten.
Een collega van O. heeft donderdag aangifte gedaan bij de Koninklijke Marechaussee. De kans bestaat dat O., die in hoger beroep werd vrijgesproken, wegens nieuwe feiten wederom voor de rechter moet verschijnen.
In het tv-programma NOVA zeiden twee mariniers dat ze onder druk van leidinggevenden tegenover de marechaussee verklaringen hebben afgelegd ten gunste van Eric O. Volgens hun advocaat Peters is er sprake geweest van bedreiging, dwang en het achterhouden van bewijsmateriaal. Zo zouden foto’s van de omgekomen Irakees verdonkeremaand zijn.'

Hiervan moeten talloze autoriteiten op de hoogte zijn geweest, zowel militairen als hoge ambtenaren en politiek verantwoordelijken, zoals de voormalige wethouder van Borculo en voormalig minister van Defensie, de VVDer Kamp. We zullen nooit weten wie allemaal wist van welke autoriteiten mijneed hebben gepleegd en een jusitieel onderzoek hebben belemmerd. Iedereen was verantwoordelijk, maar niemand kan verantwoordelijk worden gesteld, zo gaat dat altijd in Nederland. En zeker geen politici. Ben benieuwd of Eric O zijn schadevergoeding wegens en eerherstel zal krijgen.
Deze zin uit Elsevier is kenmerkend: 'Tijdens een geheime operatie in Bosnië in 1997 schakelde Eric O., die door het OM werd beschuldigd van het onopzettelijk doodschieten van een plunderaar in irak en door de rechter is vrijgesproken, een van oorlogsmisdaden verdachte Kroaat uit.' 'Uitschakelen' is vakjargon onder militairen voor het doden van een mens, klakkeloos door Elsevier overgenomen. Leve de Nederlandse journalistiek!
Hoe ligt dat trouwens juridisch? Nederland kent de doodstraf niet. Hoe kan dan een Nederlandse militair zonder zelfs ook maar een of ander gerechtelijk vonnis opdracht krijgen bij een 'geheime operatie in Bosnie...een van oorlogsmisdaden verdachte Kroaat' uit te schakelen? Een verdachte die niet veroordeeld was dus en toch doden bij een geheime operatie. Waarom was die 'operatie' geheim? En waarom is die operatie nog steeds geheim? Komop jongens en meisjes, het gaat hier niet om niks, het gaat niet om het eeuwige politieke gezever op dat Haagse pleintje waar jullie altijd als de kippen bij zijn, maar het gaat hier om leven en dood en de veel geroemde vrijheid van meningsuiting, persvrijheid ook. Waarom zoekt Elsevier dat niet eens uit, of een van mijn andere immer wakkere collega's die zo geinteresseerd zijn in oorlogshandelingen?

Trouw, Misschien Wel 25

Trouw bericht:
'De top van uitgeversconcern PCM heeft zich in 2002 afgevraagd of Trouw wel kon blijven voortbestaan. Dat zegt scheidend hoofdredacteur Frits van Exter vandaag in een interview met deze krant. „Ik had altijd het gevoel gehad: ja, met Trouw komt het wel goed. Maar de werkelijkheid was dat we op een koord aan het dansen waren.” Pas na het doorvoeren van een miljoenenbezuiniging bleef PCM Trouw uitgeven.'

Eerder verklaarde Frits van Exter tegen Extra, een tijdschrift dat de media kritisch volgde, onder de kop: De conditionering van de kudde het volgende: 'Lezers horen wantrouwend te zijn tegenover de media... De aandacht van de media [ wordt] natuurlijk voor een belangrijk deel gestuurd… door de politieke machten… Dat geldt voor de nationale politiek, maar natuurlijk ook voor de internationale politiek… Het heeft voor een deel te maken met de vluchtigheid van het medium. Deels ook volgen de media elkaar, sommige zijn dominanter, en andere lijden aan kuddegedrag… Als je volgend bent, dan betekent dat als een autoriteit, of iemand die gekozen is om een bepaald gezag uit te oefenen, zegt “ik vind dit een belangrijk onderwerp, daar gaan we nou es wat aan doen,” dat je dat ook bekijkt. De dingen waar hij (sic) het niet over heeft, die volg je dus minder… het werkt voor een deel reflexmatig. Reflexen zijn het, je bent daar geconditioneerd in.’
Dat verklaart veel, maar zeker niet alles. Waarom precies laat Trouw zich sturen 'door de politieke machten'? Misschien 'omdat we op een koord aan het dansen waren?' Zo niet, waarom dan wel? Waar komt die conditionering vandaan? Commerciele motieven? Of ideologische motieven? Vertel het deze lezers Frits, afgaande op je uitspraken heb jij veel ervaring met 'kuddegedrag'. Ik zal het Trouw vragen, maar wedden dat de krant niet reageert. Terwijl ik toch het advies van Van Exter keurig volg, te weten 'wantrouwend te zijn tegenover de media.' Het gekke is dat Trouw van alles beweert, Trouw zegt voor een kritische controle te zijn, maar wil het verbieden zodra het henzelf betreft, Trouw wantrouwt de media die teveel 'reflexmatig' reageert, maar meldt dat niet in eigen krant. Integendeel, zoals we op de foto zien, bericht Trouw op de voorpagina over bijna de gehele breedte wel iets anders.

'The World Social Forum: From Defense to Offense" - by Immanuel Wallerstein

The World Social Forum (WSF) met in Nairobi, Kenya from January 20-25. The organization, founded as a sort of anti-Davos, has matured and evolved more than even its participants realize. From the beginning, the WSF has been a meeting of a wide range of organizations and movements from around the world who defined themselves as opposed to neo-liberal globalization and imperialism in all its forms. Its slogan has been "another world is possible" and its structure has been that of an open space without officers, spokespeople, or resolutions. The WSF has been against neo-liberal globalization and the term alterglobalists has been coined to define the stance of its proponents - another kind of global structure. In the first several WSF meetings, beginning in 2001, the emphasis was defensive. Participants, each time more numerous, denounced the defects of the Washington Consensus, the efforts of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to legislate neo-liberalism, the pressures of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on peripheral zones to privatize everything and open frontiers to the free flow of capital, and the aggressive posture of the United States in Iraq and elsewhere. In this sixth world meeting, this defensive language was much reduced - simply because everyone took it for granted. And these days the United States seems less formidable, the WTO seems deadlocked and basically impotent, the IMF almost forgotten. The New York Times, reporting on this year's Davos meeting, talked of the recognition that there is a "shifting power equation" in the world, that "nobody is really in charge" any more, and that "the very foundations of the multilateral system" have been shaken, "leaving the world short on leadership at a time when it is increasingly vulnerable to catastrophic shocks." In this chaotic situation, the WSF is presenting a real alternative, and gradually creating a web of networks whose political clout will emerge in the next five to ten years. Participants at the WSF have debated for a long time whether it should continue to be an open forum or should engage in structured, planned political action. Quietly, almost surreptitiously, it became clear at Nairobi that the issue was moot. The participants would do both - leave the WSF as an open space that was inclusive of all those who wanted to transform the existing world-system and, at the same time, permit and encourage those who wanted to organize specific political actions to do so, and to organize to do so at WSF meetings'.

De vraag is nu waarom de Volkskrant-redactie deze context niet belicht. Per slot van rekening, wanneer de krant wel een journalist naar de regio stuurt die een ondergeschikte militair naar zijn mening vraagt, waarom zou de Volkskrant dan niet internet raadplegen om beter geinformeerde bronnen te raadplegen, zoals de vier sterren generaal buiten dienst Wesley Clark? Mogen de Volkskrant-lezers deze feiten niet weten? Mogen ze de achtergronden, de context niet weten? Waarom beseft de Volkskrant-redactie niet dat ze nu gebruikt wordt als propagandakanaal? Gezien de achtergrond en de context, de feiten, is het toch niet zo moeilijk om dat te beseffen? En denkt de Volkskrant redactie werkelijk dat haar lezers zo stupide zijn dat ze deze propganda even klakkeloos en gedachteloos zal slikken als de redactie zelf? Het raadplegen van internet is veel zinniger en goedkoper dan het sturen van een journalist die onder strenge militaire voorwaarden aan boord van een Amerikaans schip rondgeleid wordt. Sterker nog, als hij iets zou schrijven dat de Amerikaanse militairen onwelgevallig is dan worden hij en de Volkskrant voortaan door de Amerikaanse autoriteiten geboycot. Daarom weten de embedded journalist en de Volkskrant maar al te goed wat wel en niet geschreven mag worden. Uit eigen ervaring weet ik hoe journalisten in conflictsituaties aan banden worden gelegd. Vandaar dat onafhankelijke journalisten als - om er maar twee te noemen - John Pilger en Robert Fisk, journalisten van wereldnaam, zich nooit in een dergelijke situatie laten manoeuvreren, waarbij autoriteiten beperkingen kunnen opleggen. Waarom doet de Volkskrant dit wel? Ik zal het opnieuw mijn collega's bij de Volkskrant vragen. Of ik antwoord krijg begin ik te betwijfelen.

Net zoals de rampzalige bezetting van Irak al lang was voorbereid door de Amerikaanse neoconservatieven, geldt dat ook voor een aanval op Iran. Dat is de grotere context die de Volkskrant niet geeft. De onafhankelijke Amerikaanse onderzsoeksjournalist Seymour Hersh geeft wel die context.

The Bush administration continues moving closer to a nuclear attack on Iran, and we ignore the obvious buildup at our peril.
Russian media is sounding alarms. In February, ultra-nationalist leader Vladimir Shirinovsky warned that the US would launch a strike against Tehran at the end of this month. Then last week, the Russian News and Information Agency Novosti (RIA-Novosti) quoted military experts predicting the US will attack Iran on April 6th, Good Friday. According to RIA-Novosti, the imminent assault will target Iranian air and naval defense capabilities, armed forces headquarters as well as key economic assets and administration headquarters. Massive air strikes will be deployed, possibly tactical nuclear weapons as well, and the Bush administration will attempt to exploit the resulting chaos and political unrest by installing a pro-US government.
Sound familiar? It's Iraq Déjà vu all over again, and we know how well that war has gone.
Seymour Hersh has published numerous articles in The New Yorker detailing the Bush administration's plans to invade Iran. His latest, "The Redirection," discusses US participation in Iran-based clandestine operations, the kidnapping of hundreds of Iranians (including many "humanitarian and aid workers") by US forces and the shocking revelation that an Iran-Contra-type scandal has been run out of Vice President Dick Cheney's office with some of the illicit funds going to groups "sympathetic to al-Qaeda." '

'Een showproces' (David Yallop in Netwerk vanavond) over de uitspraak in het Lockerbieproces. 'Een schandalig Amerikaans politiek poldermodel' (DaanSpeak). Een van de twee verdachten is veroordeeld tot minimaal twintig jaar, de ander is vrij man, zie ook de NRC. Tijdens het proces is men altijd uitgegaan van een samenzwering tussen beide verdachten. Dus hoe bestaat het dan dat er één wordt veroordeeld en de ander niet? Leg dat maar eens uit zonder de woorden politieke inmening in rechtspraak te gebruiken.'

De tijd dat England rules the waves ligt ver achter ons. De Independent bericht over de gevangen neming van Britse marinemensen door Iran:
'The Al-Alam television station also displayed a letter that Leading Seaman Turney had written to her family in England. In it she said: "We were out in the boats when we were arrested by Iranian forces as we had apparently gone into Iranian waters. I wish we hadn't because then I would be home with you all right now ... I want you all to know that I am well and safe."
The Ministry of Defence in London stressed that what Leading Seaman Turney had said should be judged in the context of the pressures she had been subjected to while in captivity.'
Dat laatste kan best, maar dat geldt dus helemaal voor burgers die jarenlang onder veel martelendere omstandigheden vastzitten in het gevangenkamp van Quantanamo Bay en dan ineens van alles bekennen. Maar dat melden de autoriteiten en de westerse commerciele massamedia niet.

Intussen is de Volkskrant er helemaal klaar voor en probeert ook zijn lezers rijp te maken voor Amerikaans en Brits oorlogsgeweld, net zoals de krant deed voor de rampzalige bezetting van Irak.
Op de voorpagina onder een maar liefst zes kolommen brede foto van een Amerikaanse patrouilleboot op het punt te worden 'gelanceerd',' zoals de Volkskrant dit noemt, staat: Eén vonkje en het is oorlog in de Golf.
Dat is de boodschap van de Volkskrant, maar wanneer we het artikel lezen, dan blijkt het een uitspraak te zijn van een Amerikaanse marineman, een mening die klakkeloos en zonder aanhalingstekens door de Volkskrant wordt overgenomen. Het zijn altijd mensen die nooit een oorlog van dichtbij hebben meegemaakt en nooit burgers hebben zien sterven, die de geesten rijp maken voor een of andere oorlog.
De Volkskrant meldt terloops ook het volgende: 'De Vincennes schoot in 1988 een Iraans passagiersvliegtuig neer, waarbij 290 passagiers omkwamen, omdat het door de Amerikanen werd aangezien voor een Iraans gevechtsvliegtuig.'
Een_vonkje_en_het_is_oorlog_in_de_Golf
Wat de Volkskrant verzwijgt is het feit dat volgens het officiele onderzoek:
'Disaster was caused by multiple factors:
– Human error
• Poor decision making
• Erroneous expectancies
– Human/system interface mishaps
• System deficiencies
• Lack of training'

Desondanks werden niet goed opgeleide Amerikaanse marinemensen met niet goed functionerende apparatuur naar dit uiterst strategische gebied gestuurd, met als gevolg de dood van 290 burgers. Sterker nog de Volkskrant meldt ook niet dat:

Waarom werd deze Amerikaanse marineofficier gedecoreerd voor de dood van 290 burgers? Waarom onderzoekt de Volkskrant dit niet? Nooit heeft de VS zijn excuses aangeboden voor de dood van 290 onschuldige burgers. En waarom niet? Omdat volgens president Bush senior destijds: 'I will never apologize for the United States of America ? I don't care what the facts are. -George Bush, Newsweek, August 15, 1989 (Commenting o­n the shooting down of an Iranian airliner by the U.S. warship Vincennes, killing 290 civilian passengers.)'

In today's New York Times (where else?) there's yet another story about super-rich urbanites sacrificing delivered meals and cab rides in the name of environmentalism. Meet the Beavens: Colin, 43, a writer of historical nonfiction; Michelle, 39, a writer at BusinessWeek; and Isabella, 2, who live together in their Eames-furnished, "elegant prewar on Lower Fifth Avenue" that Michelle bought in 1999.
The Beavens are doing their darndest to live an entire year with No Impact, meaning no waste. They will only eat organic food grown within 250 miles of Manhattan, will make no trash except compost, will use no paper (including toilet), and have unplugged all their household appliances. However, Michelle will continue using her Kiehl's and Fresh moisturizer, laundry will be done by machine, and the cleaning lady (thank you Jesus!) gets to keep using the vacuum.
It's admirable that the Beavens are trying to reduce their impact on the earth, albeit, only for a year. But it's annoying that their No Impact lifestyle is possible only because they have the enormous funds and spare time to do so.'

'Time Caught in Act of Dumbing Down the News for US Readers.

Blogger Paul Schmelzer has been busy raising questions about some of the nation's widely read periodicals when it comes to the selection of their cover stories—namely the difference between Time's April 2 U.S. and International editions. While the international cover features a story about Pakistani religious extremists filtering across the border of Afghanistan "with the intention of imposing their strict interpretation of Islam on a population unable to fight back," the US edition of the publication features the story, "The Case for Teaching the Bible." Schmelzer wonders why Time isn't giving the U.S. the same edition that the rest of the world is seeing on newsstands. The choice can't only be about marketing and keeping newsstand sales up in the U.S. Something's a little fishy here.
This isn't the first time that a major US news weekly has pulled this trick of presenting the news differently to US readers than it does to the rest of the world. Last September, Newsweek gave international readers a cover story about the Taliban and US readers a cover featuring photographer Annie Leibovitz, in essence replacing with a hard-hitting news story of international importance with a much lighter celebrity piece.'

A US court has dismissed a lawsuit against former US defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld over claims prisoners were tortured in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But Judge Thomas Hogan ruled the five Iraqis and four Afghans did not have US constitutional rights, and also that Mr Rumsfeld was immune from such suits.
Two human rights groups brought the suit against him and three officers.

Details of abuse
The nine men suffered abuse including being:
hung upside-down and slapped until they lost consciousness
stabbed with knives
subjected to electric shocks
deprived of sleep by loud noises and bright lights
grabbed by aggressive dogs
They also were subjected to sexual humiliation.
None was ever charged with a crime.'

'U.S. Navy flexes muscles in Persian Gulf

ABOARD THE USS JOHN C. STENNIS — American warplanes screamed off two aircraft carriers Tuesday as the U.S. Navy staged its largest show of force in the Persian Gulf since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, launching a mammoth exercise meant as a message to the Iranians.
The maneuvers with 15 warships and more than 100 aircraft were sure to heighten tensions with Iran, which has frequently condemned the U.S. military presence off its coast and is in a faceoff with the West over its nuclear program and its capture of a British naval team.
While they would not say when the war games were planned, U.S. commanders insisted the exercises were not a direct response to Friday's seizure of the 15 British sailors and marines, but they also made clear that the flexing of the Navy's military might was intended as a warning.
"If there is strong presence, then it sends a clear message that you better be careful about trying to intimidate others," said Capt. Bradley Johanson, commander of the Stennis.
"Iran has adopted a very escalatory posture with the things that they have done," he added.
The exercises began four days after Iranian forces detained the 15 Britons for allegedly being in Iranian territorial waters near the northern end of the Gulf. U.S. and British officials insist the team was properly searching cargo vessels inside Iraqi waters.
F/A-18 fighter jets roared off the Stennis' flight deck all day, mounting a dozen rapid-fire training sorties against imaginary enemy ships and aircraft. A second task force with the carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower also took part in the drills.
"These maneuvers demonstrate our flexibility and capability to respond to threats to maritime security," said Navy Lt. John Perkins, 32, of Louisville, Ky., as the Stennis cruised about 80 miles off the United Arab Emirates after entering the Persian Gulf overnight.
"They're showing we can keep the maritime environment safe and the vital link to the global economy open."
At the headquarters of the Navy's 5th Fleet in Bahrain, Cmdr. Kevin Aandahl said the maneuvers would last several days. He said U.S. warships would stay out of Iran's territorial waters, which extend 12 miles off the Iranian coast.
None of America's naval coalition partners in the region joined the maneuvers.'

Een opmerkelijk feit gezien de bewering van Henk Muller van de Volkskrant in zijn krant dat 'de verhouding tussen het Westen en Iran, ook militair, nu uiterst gespannen [is].' Muller noemde daarbij geen bronnen. Vanochtend verzocht ik de krant om een reactie op mijn volgende vraag:

'"De verhouding tussen het Westen en Iran is, ook militair, nu uiterst gespannen." Hoe nu Henk Muller? Staat Nederland of de NAVO op het punt Iran militair aan te vallen? Zo nee, waaruit blijkt dan dat 'de verhouding tussen het Westen en Iran, ook militair, nu uiterst gespannen is?' Anders is er sprake van een agressieoorlog en dat is in strijd met het internationaal recht, zoals we ook sinds Neurenberg weten. Dan geldt alleen nog het recht van de sterkste. Een onafhankelijke journalist kan jouw artikeltje lezen als een stukje propaganda voor militair ingrijpen, het lijkt alsof je de geesten rijp wil maken voor een nieuw gewelddadig en rampzalig avontuur in het Midden Oosten, nu volgens jou "de verhouding tussen het Westen en Iran, ook militair, nu uiterst gespannen [is]" en als het ware de volgende logische stap bijna niet anders kan zijn dan militair geweld. We glijden als het ware naar een oorlog toe, althans die suggestie spreekt uit jouw tekst. Daarom mijn vraag over het hele Westen. Een antwoord wordt op prijs gesteld.

Wat is dat toch? De afgelopen jaren zie ik steeds meer - vooral blanke - jonge mannen met een kaal hoofd. Vroeger schaamde een kerel zich om met een kale knikker rond te lopen. Er was maar 1 vent op aarde die echt kaal was, te weten de filmster Yul Brunner. Tegenwoordig is het mode om met zo'n geschoren ei rond te lopen. Het is waanzinnig interessant om uit te zoeken waar die omslag aan ligt. Is het een hormonale kwestie? Zitten mannen in deze tijd met een of ander haarcomplex opgescheept? Is de rol van de man dermate aangetast dat hij zijn haar afscheert of spontaan kaal wordt? Ikzelf heb goddank een forse bos haar op mijn hoofd. Ik moet er niet aan denken om met zo'n badmuts te moeten rondstappen. Vinden vrouwen een kerel met zo'n bloot hoofd aantrekkelijk? Zo ja, waarom? Wie is er mee begonnen met zo'n steriele kop. Het heeft ook iets pedants en het heeft iets verwijfds. Waarom is het een westers fenomeen? In Afrika en Azie zie je het niet. Verliest de westerse man haar voor haar zijn mannelijkheid? Kijk nu zelf naar dit hoofd. Geen gezicht toch? Net zo angstvallig als een vrouw haar benen scheert, scheert hij zijn hoofd. Er mag geen haartje te zien zijn. Het lijkt wel een vorm van smetvrees.

De VPRO van Schrurs

Alles is vorm geworden, de inhoud telt niet meer mee. 'Kijkers... willen het verhaal beleven.' Het is de taal van de marketing-manager, het martkdenken, de reclame. En deze nonsense denkt Schrurs ook echt, dat is het absurde. Van een omroep voor intellectuelen is het nu een commerciele omroep geworden, waar de consument van alles beleeft. Inmiddels zijn vele programmamakers bij de VPRO verdwenen, alleen het oude management zit er nog steeds. Dat lijkt misschien wonderlijk, maar dat is het niet. Degenen die het meest en langst vergaderden zijn blijven zitten.

Al zeventig jaar geleden schreef Nederlands grootste historicus Huizinga: 'Er heerst in de huidige wereld een georganiseerd puerilisme van mateloze omvang. [...] Het kan soms schijnen, alsof de hedendaagse mensheid geen hoger gemeenschappelijke cultuurfunctie meer kent, dan met blijve of toornige blik in de pas te lopen. [...] Men spant de instincten in het gareel om van het oordeel geen last te hebben.' En in die wereld moet men de werkelijkheid beleven, want de verveling is er verpletterend en alles moet een kick zijn. Tot uiteindelijk de verveling weer toeslaat en het verlangen naar een nog grotere kick, een nog intensere beleving, de oplossing lijkt.

'OPERATION BITE: APRIL 6 SNEAK ATTACK BY US FORCES AGAINST IRAN PLANNED, RUSSIAN MILITARY SOURCES WARN
GENERAL IVASHOV CALLS FOR EMERGENCY SESSION OF UN SECURITY COUNCIL TO WARD OFF LOOMING US AGGRESSION

The long awaited US military attack on Iran is now on track
for the first week of April, specifically for 4 AM on April
6, the Good Friday opening of Easter weekend, writes the well-known Russian journalist Andrei Uglanov in the Moscow weekly "Argumenty Nedeli." Uglanov cites Russian military experts close to the Russian General Staff for his account.
The attack is slated to last for twelve hours, according to Uglanov, lasting from 4 AM until 4 PM local time. Friday is a holiday in Iran. In the course of the attack, code named Operation Bite, about 20 targets are marked for bombing; the list includes uranium enrichment facilities, research centers, and laboratories.
The first reactor at the Bushehr nuclear plant, where
Russian engineers are working, is supposed to be spared from destruction. The US attack plan reportedly calls for the Iranian air defense system to be degraded, for numerous Iranian warships to be sunk in the Persian Gulf, and the for the most important headquarters of the Iranian armed forces to be wiped out.
The attacks will be mounted from a number of bases, including the island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. Diego Garcia is currently home to B-52 bombers equipped with standoff missiles. Also participating in the air strikes will be US naval aviation from aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf, as well as from those of the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. Additional cruise missiles will be fired from submarines in the Indian Ocean and off the coast of the Arabian peninsula. The goal is allegedly to set back Iran's nuclear program by several years, writes Uglanov, whose article was re-issued by RIA-Novosti in various languages, but apparently not English, several days ago. The story is the top item on numerous Italian and German blogs, but so far appears to have been ignored by US websites.
Observers comment that this dispatch represents a high-level orchestrated leak from the Kremlin, in effect a war warning, which draws on the formidable resources of the Russian intelligence services, and which deserves to be taken with the utmost seriousness by pro-peace forces around the world.
Asked by RIA-Novosti to comment on the Uglanov report, retired Colonel General Leonid Ivashov confirmed its essential features in a March 21 interview: "I have no doubt that there will be an operation, or more precisely a violent action against Iran." Ivashov, who has reportedly served at various times as an informal advisor to Putin, is currently the Vice President of the Moscow Academy for Geopolitical Sciences.
Ivashov attributed decisive importance to the decision of the Democratic leadership of the US House of Representatives to remove language from the just-passed Iraq supplemental military appropriations bill which would have demanded that Bush come to Congress before launching an attack on Iran. Ivashov pointed out that the language was eliminated under pressure from AIPAC, the lobbing group representing the Israeli extreme right, and of Israeli Foreign Minister Tsipi Livni.
"We have drawn the unmistakable conclusion that this operation will take place," said Ivashov. In his opinion, the US planning does not include a land operation: " Most probably there will be no ground attack, but rather massive air attacks with the goal of annihilating Iran's capacity for military resistance, the centers of administration, the key economic assets, and quite possibly the Iranian political leadership, or at least part of it," he continued.
Ivashov noted that it was not to be excluded that the Pentagon would use smaller tactical nuclear weapons against targets of the Iranian nuclear industry. These attacks could paralyze everyday life, create panic in the population, and generally produce an atmosphere of chaos and uncertainty all over Iran, Ivashov told RIA-Novosti. "This will unleash a struggle for power inside Iran, and then there will be a peace delegation sent in to install a pro-American government in Teheran," Ivashov continued. One of the US goals was, in his estimation, to burnish the image of the current Republican administration, who would now be able to boast that they had wiped out the Iranian nuclear program.
Among the other outcomes, General Ivashov pointed to a partition of Iran along the same lines as Iraq, and a subsequent carving up of the Near and Middle East into smaller regions. "This concept worked well for them in the Balkans and will now be applied to the greater Middle East," he commented.
"Moscow must expert Russia's influence by demanding an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council to deal with the current preparations for an illegal use of force against Iran and the destruction of the basis of the United Nations Charter," said General Ivashov. "In this context Russia could cooperate with China, France and the non-permanent members of the Security Council. We need this kind of preventive action to ward off the use of force," he concluded.'

'Iraq's Environmental Nightmare Drags On

Four years after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and despite 22 billion dollars spent on recovery and reconstruction, Iraq's environment remains in disastrous shape. "The Tigris and Euphrates rivers are essentially open sewers," Azzam Alwash, head of Nature Iraq, a conservation group based in Baghdad, told Tierramérica. Industrial waste, hospital waste, fertilizer run-off from farming, as well as oil spills plague the two rivers that define the Mesopotamia region and which provide much of the irrigation and drinking water. "We inherited a terrible situation when it comes to the environment," Narmin Othman, Iraq's environment minister, said in a Tierramérica interview. The natural environment of Iraq has been devastated by three wars since 1980, and decades of neglect and mismanagement under the Saddam Hussein regime (1979-2003). "The environmental laws were laughable under Saddam. State-owned industries polluted at will," Alwash said. Many of those industries were devoted to producing military material, and have been bombed and looted, leaving the country dotted with highly toxic industrial zones. Other contaminated sites belong to the oil and metal industries. The ongoing conflict -- launched by the United States on Mar. 20, 2003, and which has fuelled anti-occupation sentiment and sectarian violence -- also means growing mountains of debris, including demolished buildings, vehicles and military equipment, have to be cleaned up and stored somewhere. In 2005, a study by the Iraqi Ministry of Environment and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNDP) identified 50 such environmental "hotspots" and urged immediate action to clean up the worst five.'

Iraq has become a country where thieves are entrusted with its
richness and where murderous gangs are entrusted with its security,

The war on Iraq was not carried out on the basis of mere strategic
interests. No strategies or interests could explain the level of
death and destruction that Iraq had undergone ever since the Gulf War
in 1991. If one were to assume that the US led invasion in 2003 is a
continuation of that war, then Iraq could be said to have suffered
more horrors than any country had, including the countries that were
involved the WWII.

We are talking about at least two and a half million Iraqi civilians
who had met their fate, where 750,000 of them were killed during the
last four years. That figure represents 10% of Iraq’s population. In
addition, you have over three and a half million Iraqis displaced
(two million of them fled outside the country while the other1.5
million lost their homes and became displaced inside their own
country). That is 14% of the population.

Even when the Nazis brought destruction to Europe during WWII, no
country alone suffered such human losses. Although the Soviet Union
at the time, who suffered the biggest number of victims, had lost 20
million lives (military and civilian), that figure represents only
10% of the population which was 197 million in 1941.'
