Hamas: PA conspiring with Israel

As the IDF offensive concluded its fourth day on Tuesday, Hamas accused the Palestinian Authority of planning to return to the Gaza Strip with the help of Israel.
PA President Mahmoud Abbas...
According to a report published by the Hamas-affiliated Palestine Information Center Web site, PA President Mahmoud Abbas has ordered his officials in Ramallah to set up an "emergency room" to prepare for reassuming control over the Gaza Strip after the Hamas government is toppled by Israel.
It said the emergency room consisted of commanders of the PA security forces and the interior minister.
The report claimed that Abbas was coordinating his moves with the Egyptians and the Saudis.
It also quoted sources in Ramallah as saying that Abbas's top adviser, Nimmer Hammad, phoned Defense Ministry official Amos Gilad last week and told him that the PA "believes in Israel's right to liquidate Hamas."
Earlier this week, two senior PA officials told The Jerusalem Post that the PA was "ready" to return to the Gaza Strip when and if the Hamas government was overthrown.
The Hamas allegation, which has been strongly denied by the PA, is an indication of the growing tensions between the Islamist movement and Abbas's Fatah faction in the wake of the IDF offensive.
Tensions between the two parties peaked earlier this week when Abbas and other PA leaders held Hamas responsible for the current violence because of its refusal to extend the cease-fire with Israel.
Hamas officials are convinced that one of the main goals of the IDF operation is to remove the Hamas government from power so as to pave the way for the return of Abbas's men to the Gaza Strip.
Hamas legislator and spokesman Mushir al-Masri claimed that Abbas had known in advance about the exact timing of the "surprise" IDF attack.
"It's no secret that Abbas knew in advance about the attack," he said.
"This is not our analysis; rather, it's based on information we received recently."
A Hamas official in Gaza City also claimed that former Fatah security commanders who fled the Strip during the Hamas takeover in the summer of
2007 were holding meetings in Cairo and Ramallah to discuss returning home.
"These Fatah members are working with the Egyptians, Israelis and Americans," he said. "They include [former Fatah security chiefs] Muhammad Dahlan and Rashid Abu Shabak."
The Hamas official accused the Fatah representatives of providing Israel with "vital information" about the location of Hamas security installations.
A leaflet distributed by a Fatah group in Gaza urged supporters of the faction to prepare for the possibility of taking control over the Gaza Strip.'

Het Racisme van het NOS-Journaal

Ik kreeg deze reactie:

'Anoniem said...

'PERSBERICHT
Amsterdam, 30 december 2008

US 'not to stomach defeat in Gaza'
Wed, 31 Dec 2008 13:54:06 GMT

Washington is reportedly "worried" that Hamas may gain in popularity if US-backed Israeli attacks on Gaza amount to a war of attrition.
A new report has revealed that the 5-day-old Israeli military campaign against Gaza has made the Bush administration increasingly nervous as the number of Palestinian casualties continues to rise.
Washington is extremely concerned that if the massive offensive against one of the most populated areas on earth does not lead to the fall of Hamas, support for the Palestinian group may increase, the Los Angeles Times reported on Wednesday.
The daily cited sources close to discussions between Washington and Tel Aviv as saying that the White House wants Israel to settle on a timetable and an exit strategy so that their bitter experience in the 2006 war on Hezbollah is not repeated.
Israel waged a 33-day war on Lebanon in 2006 to destroy the military power of Hezbollah -- a group that has been established to defend Lebanon.
Hezbollah, however, emerged victorious and gained immense popularity.
"You're not hearing that same confidence you did in 2006 that the Israeli military can impose a new strategic reality and should go full force," the daily quoted an unnamed Arab diplomat close to the discussions as saying.
"There's a real contrast between their words then and now," he added.
A Palestinian mourns as he carried the lifeless body of a child killed by the Israeli bombing of Qana in 2006.
During its war on Lebanon, Israel bombed parts of southern and eastern Lebanon and later widened its bombing campaign to cover most of the country. The violence killed around 1,200 Lebanese, mostly civilians; and
157 Israelis, mostly soldiers.
The United States has also warned Israel, according to the report, to avoid any strike that could inflict enormous civilian casualties, saying such an act would further turn the international community against Tel Aviv.
During the war in 2006, the Israel Air Force attacked a three-story building in the southern village of Qana, killing 28 civilians, about half of whom were children.
The attack caused an international outcry and forced Israel to halt air strikes for 48 hours.
Despite international calls for Israel to end its current military offensive into Gaza, which started on Saturday, Israel is reportedly preparing to launch a ground assault into the region.'

`FEW EXPERTS WARNED THIS WEALTH WAS NOT REAL BUT VIRTUAL´
Farewell to property porn
For years the topic of choice at smart London dinner parties was
the escalating value of one's own property. This led to a darker
trend: houses were treated not as homes but as commodities to be
relentlessly exploited
by Aditya Chakrabortty

At the start of this century, a new race took over British
television. They didn't look so different from the people in
whose living rooms they took up residence: they had the same
receding hairlines and weight issues. But they had one
apparently magic power: they could turn bricks into money.
They were property presenters, and they had come to teach
viewers how to cash in on the real-estate boom. Their
programmes fell into the genre of reality documentaries,
where real people did real things (such as buy or sell or
renovate houses), only with a film crew breathing down their
necks. The format was stale, but the subject - investing in
property - was intoxicatingly new.
Real-estate debutantes could watch To Buy or Not to Buy for
advice. Once you'd bought your home, the House Doctor was on
call to tart it up. Fancied seeing how the neighbours were
doing? Television allowed you to spy on Other People's
Houses. And when the time came to cash in and sell up there
was Trading Up. Within a few years, the genre had advanced
onto Property Developing Abroad - even this risky, fiddly
business was now considered fun. Only one subject was
guaranteed never to be covered: what to do if you couldn't
keep up the mortgage payments.
This flood came during the biggest real-estate boom in
British history, with house prices rising by around 20% a
year. Mid-market newspapers regularly splashed property
surveys across their front pages, while venerable
home-furnishings magazines junked features on the perfect
table lamp for spreads on kitchen extensions.
Still, it was television that really got the housing bug,
showing 20 different programmes a season at the height of the
bubble. Every day of the working week, a property-drunk
nation could stagger back to their homes - which had
appreciated more that day than their owners had earned at
their jobs - and soak up an evening's advice on how to cash
in on the boom. Digital channels offered repeats to keep one
going into the small hours.'

FROM THERMOPYLAE TO THE TWIN TOWERS
The West's selective reading of history
by Alain Gresh

Shortly after the first world war, the French literary critic
and historian Henri Massis (1886-1970) preached a crusade
against the dangers threatening European values and thought -
largely identified with those of France, in his mind. He
wasn't entirely misguided: across the world, colonised
nations were in revolt. He wrote: "The future of western
civilisation, of humanity itself, is now under threat...
Every traveller, every foreigner who has spent any time in
the Far East agrees that the way in which the population
thinks has changed more in the last 10 years than it did over
10 centuries. The old, easy-going submissiveness has given
way to blind hostility - sometimes genuine hatred, just
waiting for the right moment to act. From Calcutta to
Shanghai, from the steppes of Mongolia to the plains of
Anatolia, the whole of Asia trembles with a blind desire for
freedom. These people no longer recognise the supremacy that
the West has taken for granted since John Sobieski
conclusively stemmed the Turkish and Tartar invasions beneath
the walls of Vienna. Instead they aspire to rebuild their
unity against the white man, whose overthrow they
proclaim" (1).
These fears are resurfacing today in a very different
context, also marked by a series of cataclysmic events: the
end of the cold war, 9/11, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan
and above all the restructuring of the global order in favour
of new powers, such as China and India. Various authors, many
of them highly regarded, have picked up on the Manichean view
of history as an eternal confrontation between civilisation
and barbarism as they excavate the roots of what Anthony
Pagden calls the "2,500-year struggle" now bathing the world
in blood.
Pagden has taught in some of the world's most prestigious
universities, including Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard. The
picture he paints of world history is a crude one: "A flame
had been lit in Troy which would burn steadily down the
centuries, as the Trojans were succeeded by the Persians, the
Persians by the Phoenicians, the Phoenicians by Parthians,
the Parthians by the Sassanids, the Sassanids by the Arabs,
and the Arabs by the Ottoman Turks... The battle lines have
shifted over time, and the identities of the antagonists have
changed. But both sides' broader understanding of what it is
that separates them has remained, drawing, as do all such
perceptions, on accumulated historical memories, some
reasonably accurate, some entirely false" (2).'

'Israel's failure to learn
By Nir Rosen
When George Bush, the US president, first entered the White House as the commander-in-chief in 2001, Palestinians were being killed in the al-Aqsa intifada.
Eight years later, as Bush prepares to leave office, Israel is carrying out one of the largest massacres in its 60-year occupation of Palestine.
The US, then and now, strongly backs Israel's offensive, justifying it as being, in fact, defensive.
An Israeli general recently threatened to use military force to set Gaza back decades in much the same language used before the invasion of Lebanon in 2006. But despite the Israeli devastation of Lebanon, Hezbollah emerged victorious and the Shia resistance and social movement emerged a hero to the Arab world.
Israel is about to make the same mistake with Hamas. Its notion of a truce with Hamas was that the Palestinians would quietly accept the siege. Israel would deny them the basic means of survival, let alone the basic means to create a functioning society. If the Palestinians attempted to resist, they would be crushed. As in Lebanon, Israel should have learned years ago that military might cannot crush Palestinian resistance movements.
Media matters
While the Israeli military again bombs the starving and imprisoned population of 1.5 million Gazans, the world watches their plight live as Western media scrambles to explain and, in some cases, justify the ongoing carnage.
Even some Arab outlets have attempted to equate Palestinian resistance - and homemade rockets - with the might of the Israeli military machine.
However, none of this is a surprise; the Israelis just concluded a global public relations campaign to gather support for their assault, even gaining the collaboration of some Arab states.
An American periodical once asked me to contribute to a discussion on whether terrorism or attacks against civilians could ever be justified.'

'jose said...

Haaretz bericht:
Last update - 22:18 06/07/2007
History Erased
By Meron Rapoport
In July 1950, Majdal - today Ashkelon - was still a mixed town. About 3,000 Palestinians lived there in a closed, fenced-off ghetto, next to the recently arrived Jewish residents. Before the 1948 war, Majdal had been a commercial and administrative center with a population of 12,000. It also had religious importance: nearby, amid the ruins of ancient Ashkelon, stood Mash'had Nabi Hussein, an 11th-century structure where, according to tradition, the head of Hussein Bin Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, was interred; his death in Karbala, Iraq, marked the onset of the rift between Shi'ites and Sunnis. Muslim pilgrims, both Shi'ite and Sunni, would visit the site. But after July 1950, there was nothing left for them to visit: that's when the Israel Defense Forces blew up Mash'had Nabi Hussein. This was not the only Muslim holy place destroyed after Israel's War of Independence. According to a book by Dr. Meron Benvenisti, of the 160 mosques in the Palestinian villages incorporated into Israel under the armistice agreements, fewer than 40 are still standing. What is unusual about the case of Mash'had Nabi Hussein is that the demolition is documented, and direct responsibility was taken by none other than the GOC Southern Command at the time, an officer named Moshe Dayan. The documentation shows that the holy site was blown up deliberately, as part of a broader operation that included at least two additional mosques, one in Yavneh and the other in Ashdod. A member of the establishment is responsible for the documentation: Shmuel Yeivin, then the director of the Department of Antiquities, the forerunner of the present-day Antiquities Authority. Yeivin, as noted by Raz Kletter, an archaeologist who has studied the first two decades of archaeology in Israel, was neither a political activist nor a champion for Arab rights. As Kletter explains, he was simply a scientist, a disciple of the British school and a member of the Mandate government's Department of Antiquities who believed that ancient sites and holy places needed to be preserved, whether they were sacred to Jews, Christians or Muslims. In line with his convictions, he fired off letters of protest and was considered a nudnik by the IDF.
"I received a report that not long ago, the army blew up the big building in the ruins of Ashkelon, which is known by the name of Maqam al-Nabi Hussein and is a holy site for the Muslim community," Yeivin wrote on July 24, 1950, to Lieutenant Colonel Yaakov Patt, the head of the department for special missions in the Defense Ministry, and sent a copy to chief of staff Yigael Yadin and other senior officers. "That building was still standing during my last visit to the site, on June 10 - in other words, the army authorities found no reason to demolish it from the conquest until the middle of 1950. I find it hard to imagine the site was blown up due to infiltrators, as they have not stopped infiltrating the area during this entire period." The detonation, by the way, was extremely successful. Of the ancient and holy site, not so much as a stone remained. Yeivin's complaint was seemingly related to procedural matters, but only seemingly. The army, he wrote, needed to understand that there were "sanctified buildings," and if it wanted to touch them, "it is proper, honest and courteous first to talk to the institutions that supervise these areas and buildings, and to consult with them in order to find ways to avoid destruction." But that is not happening, Yeivin stated. "I was told that simultaneously, the mosque in the abandoned village of Ashdod was blown up," Yeivin added. "This is not the first case. I already have had many occasions to draw your attention to similar cases elsewhere, and the chief of staff issued explicit directives with regard to the preservation of such buildings and places, but apparently none of this avails commanders of a certain type ... I believe the commander responsible for this explosion should be brought to trial and punished, because in this case there was no justification for a swift, war-contingent operation." A perusal of the IDF Archives shows that Lieutenant Colonel Patt forwarded Yeivin's complaint to Yadin. However, Yadin, who would later become Israel's preeminent archaeologist and whose father, Eliezer Sukenik, was an archaeologist of repute in his own right and Yeivin's colleague in the Mandate Department of Antiquities, was not unduly upset. Below Patt's letter addressing Yeivin's complaint are handwritten remarks: "1. Confirm receipt of letter and inform that the matter is being dealt with; 2. Add to Dayan's material for my meeting with B.-G." - referring to then prime minister and defense minister David Ben-Gurion. It stands to reason that the handwriting is Yadin's, as it is unlikely that anyone else could have met with Ben-Gurion concerning "Dayan's material." And Yadin, as is clear from another note written on the letter, did not attribute any great importance to the complaint. "Teven la'afarayim," it says, roughly the equivalent of "coals to Newcastle" - in short, there is nothing new in Yeivin's complaint.

De mensenrechtenorganisatie Defence for Children International bericht:
'The death of a 7-year-old in Gaza
At around 7:00pm on Sunday, 28 December 2008, the Keshko family was sitting around a fire in farmland near their home in al-Zaitun, central Gaza. Around the fire were Abdallah (55) and his wife Sabah (49) and their five children, Ebtihal (7), Mohammad (11), Latifa (16), Fatema (18) and Talal (23). Also by the fire were Talal’s two children, Islam (1 ½) and Ayat (4). During the course of the evening, Abdallah asked his daughter Ebtihal to get some tea from the kitchen and to ask Maysa (22), Talal’s wife, to come out of the house and join the rest of the family. Almost as soon as Ebtihal entered the house it was hit by a missile and reduced to rubble. Family members who remained outside all sustained shrapnel wounds. Abdallah remembers being covered in rubble and hearing the sound of screaming which continued on after the ambulances had arrived. Neighbours and rescue workers helped Abdallah and his family out of the rubble and they were transferred to Al-Shifa hospital for treatment for broken bones, cuts and bruises. Abdallah, and other family members were discharged from hospital after two hours. Abdallah was then informed that his daughter in-law, Maysa, was dead. Ebtihal was not at the hospital. Abdallah gathered together the rest of the family to go home, except for his wife Sabah, who had sustained a broken pelvic bone and hand and had to stay in hospital. Abdallah asked where Ebtihal was, and was told that the rescue workers were still searching the rubble of the house for her. Abdallah arrived home at around 10:00pm and joined in the search for his daughter. Some workers were searching the rubble of the house, whilst others searched the surrounding areas in case Ebtihal had been blown clear. As time passed, Abdallah began to lose hope that he would find his daughter alive.By 6:30am the next morning, rescue workers had cleared all the rubble except in the kitchen. Abdallah and other family members started clearing the kitchen and it was Abdallah who found a clump of hair covered in dust. Abdallah began to frantically dig until he uncovered the body of his daughter, Ebtihal. At this point Abdallah was no longer able to continue and sat down amongst the rubble of his home and wept. Later on in the day, Abadallah returned to the hospital to pick up the bodies of Ebtihal and Maysa for burial. Ebtihal was just seven years old. DCI-Palestine’s fieldworker could find no obvious explanation as to why the Keshko family home was targeted. As of 31 December 2008, the BBC is reporting 374 Palestinian deaths since the attacks commenced on Saturday. Reports from the Gaza based organisation, Al-Mezan indicate that as many as 39 children have been killed, but DCI-Palestine is not yet in a position to confirm this figure. Please consider sending an urgent appeal to your elected representatives demanding:
An immediate end to Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip and a ceasefire by all parties.
The immediate provision of urgent humanitarian and medical assistance to the Gaza Strip.
The immediate lifting of Israel’s siege of the Gaza Strip to allow the free flow of goods and services in and out of the territory.
An immediate cessation by EU institutions and member states of all steps to implement the EU-Israel Upgraded Action Plan approved by the EU Council of Ministers on 9 December 2008.
For further information please go to DCI-Palestine Urgent Appeal.'

Robert Fisk 45

'Robert Fisk: Why bombing Ashkelon is the most tragic irony
The Independent Tuesday, 30 December 2008

How easy it is to snap off the history of the Palestinians, to delete the narrative of their tragedy, to avoid a grotesque irony about Gaza which – in any other conflict – journalists would be writing about in their first reports: that the original, legal owners of the Israeli land on which Hamas rockets are detonating live in Gaza.
That is why Gaza exists: because the Palestinians who lived in Ashkelon and the fields around it – Askalaan in Arabic – were dispossessed from their lands in 1948 when Israel was created and ended up on the beaches of Gaza. They – or their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren – are among the one and a half million Palestinian refugees crammed into the cesspool of Gaza, 80 per cent of whose families once lived in what is now Israel. This, historically, is the real story: most of the people of Gaza don't come from Gaza.
But watching the news shows, you'd think that history began yesterday, that a bunch of bearded anti-Semitic Islamist lunatics suddenly popped up in the slums of Gaza – a rubbish dump of destitute people of no origin – and began firing missiles into peace-loving, democratic Israel, only to meet with the righteous vengeance of the Israeli air force. The fact that the five sisters killed in Jabalya camp had grandparents who came from the very land whose more recent owners have now bombed them to death simply does not appear in the story.
Both Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres said back in the 1990s that they wished Gaza would just go away, drop into the sea, and you can see why. The existence of Gaza is a permanent reminder of those hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who lost their homes to Israel, who fled or were driven out through fear or Israeli ethnic cleansing 60 years ago, when tidal waves of refugees had washed over Europe in the aftermath of the Second World War and when a bunch of Arabs kicked out of their property didn't worry the world.
Well, the world should worry now. Crammed into the most overpopulated few square miles in the whole world are a dispossessed people who have been living in refuse and sewage and, for the past six months, in hunger and darkness, and who have been sanctioned by us, the West. Gaza was always an insurrectionary place. It took two years for Ariel Sharon's bloody "pacification", starting in 1971, to be completed, and Gaza is not going to be tamed now.
Alas for the Palestinians, their most powerful political voice – I'm talking about the late Edward Said, not the corrupt Yassir Arafat (and how the Israelis must miss him now) – is silent and their predicament largely unexplained by their deplorable, foolish spokesmen. "It's the most terrifying place I've ever been in," Said once said of Gaza. "It's a horrifyingly sad place because of the desperation and misery of the way people live. I was unprepared for camps that are much worse than anything I saw in South Africa."
Of course, it was left to Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni to admit that "sometimes also civilians pay the price," an argument she would not make, of course, if the fatality statistics were reversed. Indeed, it was instructive yesterday to hear a member of the American Enterprise Institute – faithfully parroting Israel's arguments – defending the outrageous Palestinian death toll by saying that it was "pointless to play the numbers game". Yet if more than 300 Israelis had been killed – against two dead Palestinians – be sure that the "numbers game" and the disproportionate violence would be all too relevant. The simple fact is that Palestinian deaths matter far less than Israeli deaths. True, we know that 180 of the dead were Hamas members. But what of the rest? If the UN's conservative figure of 57 civilian fatalities is correct, the death toll is still a disgrace.
To find both the US and Britain failing to condemn the Israeli onslaught while blaming Hamas is not surprising. US Middle East policy and Israeli policy are now indistinguishable and Gordon Brown is following the same dog-like devotion to the Bush administration as his predecessor.
As usual, the Arab satraps – largely paid and armed by the West – are silent, preposterously calling for an Arab summit on the crisis which will (if it even takes place), appoint an "action committee" to draw up a report which will never be written. For that is the way with the Arab world and its corrupt rulers. As for Hamas, they will, of course, enjoy the discomfiture of the Arab potentates while cynically waiting for Israel to talk to them. Which they will. Indeed, within a few months, we'll be hearing that Israel and Hamas have been having "secret talks" – just as we once did about Israel and the even more corrupt PLO. But by then, the dead will be long buried and we will be facing the next crisis since the last crisis.'

Dit schreef Karen Koning Abu Zayd, hoofd van de United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), aan het begin van Jan Mulders klein jaar, "Gaza is on the threshold of becoming the first territory to be intentionally reduced to a state of abject destitution, with the knowledge, acquiescence and - some would say - encouragement of the international community." Zie: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/jan/23/israelandthepalestinians.world

Zie: http://www.counterpunch.org/cook11172008.html

Welnu, Michael Oren 'has served as a paratrooper in the Israel Defense Forces, seeing combat in the 1982 Lebanon War. He... served as the Israeli liaison officer to the U.S. Sixth Fleet during the Gulf War. He served as a Major in the IDF Reserves during the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict.'

'Pressure grows on Israel for ceasefire
Europe and US unite to offer hope in Gaza as Israel hints at 48-hour truce with Hamas
By Anne Penketh and Donald Macintyre in JerusalemWednesday, 31 December 2008

Diplomatic pressure on Israel to end its relentless military assault on Gaza gathered pace last night as its key ally Washington joined European Union foreign ministers in calling for an immediate ceasefire.
The diplomatic push for at least a temporary truce gained momentum amid an international outcry over the mounting deaths of Palestinian civilians from a four-day Israeli blitz that followed the collapse of a truce with the militant Hamas leadership in Gaza.
EU foreign ministers issued a statement choreographing a halt to the bloodiest fighting in Gaza in living memory and a return to peace negotiations as the international diplomatic machine strained to open a window of hope for the 1.5 million residents trapped inside the battered territory.
The EU initiative, decided at an emergency meeting in Paris, was bolstered by the Bush administration starting to apply pressure behind the scenes. The meeting coincided with an indication that the Israeli government may be open to a 48-hour suspension of the military operation that, by last night, had killed more than 360 Palestinians, including at least 62 civilians.
Hamas has responded to the attacks by firing rockets deep into Israel. Beersheba, 25 miles from Gaza, was hit for the first time last night as militants fired 40 rockets across the border.
The EU ministers demanded an "immediate and permanent ceasefire" by Hamas and Israel. They also backed a French call for a "humanitarian truce" that would allow relief aid, fuel and medical supplies to get into Gaza, and the evacuation of the wounded through reopened checkpoints. The Middle East Quartet – consisting of the EU, Russia, the US and the UN – issued a statement that mirrored the main points in the EU declaration, after foreign ministers consulted over the phone.
US President George Bush, who has spared Israel from criticism while blaming Hamas rockets for triggering the Israeli response, spoke for the first time yesterday to the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, and the Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak; Eygpt is a key Hamas mediator.
Humanitarian agencies have been pressing for some form of lull, partly to make distributing aid easier. The UN refugee agency UNRWA, which provides limited food aid on a rotating basis to Gaza's 750,000 refugees, has been reluctant to call families to pick up food parcels from its 12 distribution centres since Saturday because of the dangers posed by repeated bombing.'

De Israelische Terreur 535

' Israel’s lie machine working flat out to dodge “killer” question
By Stuart Littlewood

31 December 2008

Stuart Littlewood shows how Israel’s public relations strategy frames and defines the situation in Israel’s own terms regardless of the truth and, using advanced propaganda skills and the elaborate Israel lobby network, it seeks to persuade Western politicians and media to accept Israel’s version of events.

While the murderous assault on Gaza continues, I notice there's a briefing document on the website of the Israeli Embassy in London which has a lie in every line. The West's mainstream media repeat them, and even the most senior TV and radio interviewers don’t bother to challenge them.

The document is a transcript of Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni's statement to the Israeli press dated 27 December 2008 – a day that will live in infamy. It is a perfect example of the falsehoods used to dupe not only us Westerners but Israel’s own people. The statement shows how the regime's view of itself is constructed on a web of dishonesty and self-delusion.

For example:

"Israeli citizens have been under the threat of daily attack from Gaza for years."
Palestinians have been under harsh Israeli occupation for 60 years.
"Only this week hundreds of missiles and mortars shells were fired at Israeli civilian communities."
Only one in 500 Qassam rockets causes a fatality. How many thousands of Israeli bombs, missiles, rockets, grenades and tank-shells have been blasted into the crowded city and towns of the Gaza Strip by Israel’s high-tech weaponry?

"Until now we have shown restraint. But today there is no other option than a military operation."
The only legitimate option for Israel is to end the occupation and withdraw behind its 1967 border, as required under international law and UN resolutiosn. Israel has been killing Palestinians at the rate of 8 to 1 since 2000, and children at the rate of nearly 12 to 1 (B’Tselem figures). This is somebody’s idea of restraint?
"We need to protect our citizens from attack through a military response against the terror infrastructure in Gaza."
Self-defence is not a right exclusive to Israel. Palestinians have an equal right to protect their citizens from the terror tactics of Israel.

"Israel left Gaza in order to create an opportunity for peace."
Israel never left Gaza. It still occupies Gaza's airspace and coastal waters and controls all entrances and exits.

"In return, the Hamas terror organization took control of Gaza and is using its citizens as cover while it deliberately targets Israeli communities and denies any chance for peace."

Hamas was voted into power as the legitimate government of Palestine. Israel chose not to accept the people's choice, which amounted to a denial of their human rights, and immediately set about obliterating it.
"We have tried everything to reach calm without using force. We agreed to a truce through Egypt that was violated by Hamas, which continued to target Israel, hold Gilad Shalit and build up its arms."
Try talking. The Israelis' ongoing siege and economic blockade, begun shortly after Hamas was elected early in 2006, was never going to generate calm. And why is Shalit considered more important than the 9,000 Palestinians abducted and held prisoner by Israel? As soon as a Hamas government was formed Israeli troops arrested eight Hamas ministers and 20 other parliamentarians, making the work of government impossible.

"Israel continues to act to prevent humanitarian crisis and to minimize harm to Palestinian civilians."
Every agency operating in Gaza has warned of the deepening humanitarian crisis and protested about the starvation and suffering, especially of children many of whom show evidence of stunted growth.

"The responsibility for harm to civilians lies with Hamas."
Not according to the Fourth Geneva Convention.

"Hamas is a terrorist organization, supported by Iran, that does not represent the legitimate national interests of the Palestinian people but a radical Islamist agenda that seeks to deny peace for the peoples of this region."
Hamas was the popular choice of Palestinians at the last election. It is entitled under international law to take up arms against an illegal occupier and invader. If it is supported by Iran, so what? Israel receives mega-support from the US. When it comes to terror, it is Israel's conduct which fits the US definition of terrorism so perfectly – see Bush's Executive Order 13224, Section 3.

"While confronting Hamas, Israel continues to believe in the two-state solution and remains committed to negotiations with the legitimate Palestinian Authority in the context of the peace process, launched at Annapolis."
Israel is busy establishing irreversible facts on the ground that make a viable Palestinian state impossible. As everyone knows, the regime has reneged on the peace process and carries on building illegal settlements and the illegal Wall, and demolishing Palestinian homes. Months ago Hamas accepted a Palestinian state based on internationally recognized (pre-1967) borders, in accordance with UN resolutions, with full sovereignty and its capital in Jerusalem, but this has been ignored. Hamas also offered a 10-year truce, also ignored. Earlier, Yasser Arafat and the Palestine Liberation Organization recognized the State of Israel in the Oslo agreement but what good did it do? Today’s US-backed, Fatah-controlled Palestinian Authority is not representative of the Palestinian people.
"Israel expects the support and understanding of the international community, as it confronts terror, and advances the interest of all those who wish the forces of peace and co existence to determine the agenda of this region."
Israel, next to the US, is the biggest purveyor of terror in the region and only advances its own interests. It may get the support of Israel lobby stooges in other Western governments but is rapidly earning the contempt of everybody else.

From a statement dated 22 December 2008:

"Hamas, backed by Iran, has regularly stated its desire to see the complete destruction of Israel."
Israel is itself a leading destroyer and currently engaged in trying to wipe out Hamas and the Gazans. Iran’s President Ahmadinajad quoted the late Ayatollah Khomeini as saying that "this regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time" – fair comment considering that Jerusalem, with Bethlehem, was designated an “international city” under the UN Partition Plan. Israeli propaganda twisted the Iranian’s words to read “Israel must be wiped off the map”. Zionist sources and the manifestos of Israeli political parties have made it clear for a long time that Israel plans to wipe Palestine off the map, and every act and lie is directed towards that end.
"Our fight is not with the people of Gaza; it is with the extremists of Hamas."
Then why does the Israeli navy harass and fire on peaceable Gazan fishermen who are well within their own territorial waters? Why does Israel prevent Palestinian students from taking up places at foreign universities and block hospital spares, medicines, foodstuffs and foreign medics from entering Gaza? Why has the Israeli navy just rammed a mercy vessel in international waters taking doctors and medicines to Gaza? Latest air strikes have hit the Islamic University and the Ministry of Education. These are direct attacks on Gazan civil society and its infrastructure.
"Hamas started this conflict, and it bears responsibility for any harm to civilians on either side."
The conflict, started by Jewish terrorists, has been going on for 60 years, decades before Hamas came into being.
"Israel’s only responsibility is to protect Israeli citizens."
As the occupying power Israel has a duty to see that the people of the occupied territories come to no harm.
"Just as Israel seeks to defend its civilian population, Hamas seeks to kill them."
This reads far better the other way round: “Just as Hamas seeks to defend its civilian population, Israel seeks to kill them.”'

De Israelische Terreur 534

A Hundred Eyes for an Eye
Tuesday 30 December 2008
by: Norman Solomon, t r u t h o u t Perspective

Israelis and Arabs "feel that only force can assure justice," I. F. Stone noted soon after the Six-Day War in 1967. And he wrote, "A certain moral imbecility marks all ethnocentric movements. The Others are always either less than human, and thus their interests may be ignored, or more than human and therefore so dangerous that it is right to destroy them."

The closing days of 2008 have heightened the Israeli government's stature as a mighty practitioner of the moral imbecility that Stone described.

Israel's airstrikes "have killed at least 270 people so far, injured more than 1,000, many of them seriously, and many remain buried under the rubble so the death toll will likely rise," Phyllis Bennis, of the Institute for Policy Studies, pointed out on Sunday, two days into Israel's attack. "This catastrophic impact was known and inevitable, and far outweighs any claim of self-defense or protection of Israeli civilians." She mentioned "the one Israeli killed by a Palestinian rocket attack on Saturday after the Israeli assault began was the first such casualty in more than a year."

Even if you set aside the magnitude of Israel's violations of the Geneva conventions and the long terrible history of its methodical collective punishment of 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza, consider the vastly disproportionate carnage in the conflict.

"An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind," Gandhi said.

What about a hundred eyes for an eye?

It makes some of the world ill with rage. And it turns much of the United States numb with silence. Routinely, the politicians and pundits of Washington can't summon minimal decency in themselves or each other on the subject of Israel and Palestinians.

While officialdom inside the Beltway seems frozen in fear of risking "anti-Semitism" charges by actually standing up for the human rights of Palestinian people, some progress at the grassroots level has been noticeable. It includes the growth of groups such as Jewish Voice for Peace, Tikkun and The Shalom Center, where activists have worked to refute the false claims that American Jews are united behind Israeli policies.

Gaza diary: Destroyed memories
By Mohammed Ali

As the death toll from Israel's war on Gaza continues to climb, Mohammed Ali, an advocacy and media researcher for Oxfam who lives in Gaza City, will be keeping a diary of his experiences.

* Day 3 - Memories destroyed
It is the third consecutive night of the Israeli offensive.
My two young children, my wife, my sister-in-law, who is staying with us, and I all slept in our living room, which is in the centre of our flat.
During the night, there was an average of two air strikes every 10 minutes in Gaza City alone.
On the television we heard that the Israeli military had hit a mosque in Jabbalia refugee camp in the north of the Gaza Strip. We were shocked to hear that the shelling caused a house to collapse, killing five sisters inside and injuring all 11 family members.
We cried together in the knowledge that no one was safe from the air strikes.
We barely slept. Just 500 metres from our home the strikes hit the Islamic University building. I graduated from the Islamic University of Gaza. When I heard that the Israeli F16 missiles had destroyed it, I felt as though my good memories had also been obliterated.
I phoned one of my sisters who lives close to the university. She told me: "We are so scared. I don't know where to go, what to do.
The explosion shook our entire building."
I listened to her but could not find the words to reassure her.
How could I? It was obvious that no one was safe.
* Day 2 - Sleeping with one eye open
When I fell asleep on the second night of the Israeli offensive, I was afraid that I may never wake again. So I slept with one eye open, in constant fear for my family's safety.
At least once an hour, I was woken by the sound of explosions.
I constantly checked on my wife and children, thinking that our home could be the next target of the Israeli jets.
In the early hours of the morning, I woke to find my 15-month-old baby walking around the living room sobbing. I rushed over to him and held him in my arms until he fell asleep.
My mother called us over for breakfast. All of our family gathered around the table. My mother, who suffers from heart problems, told us all how, whenever a target close to our home was hit during the night, she would wake with her heart pounding.
Supplies running out
It is no secret that the Gaza Strip is heavily dependent on supplies coming from Egypt via tunnels, especially since the Israeli blockade was stepped up in November. So after we heard that the Israeli attacks had targeted the tunnels, my father went off to the grocery store to buy reserve food supplies.
When he came back he told us that food prices had tripled because of the destruction of the tunnels.
I wanted to buy nappies for my two children. My younger brother went out but struggled to find anything. I thought to myself that it is only a matter of days now until food and fuel becomes unavailable to us all.
We heard an announcement from the Israeli government that the attacks on Gaza would continue for a long time in spite of the calls from regional and international bodies and organisations for them to stop.
From my home the sound of ambulance sirens is non-stop.
Every time I hear an explosion followed by sirens, I think of those ambulances carrying the dead and injured.
I am increasingly fearful for my children, family and friends.
I think to myself that the next ambulance might be carrying one of my friends, a member of my family, or even me.
* Day 1 - Black Saturday in Gaza
I was at home, lying down on my bed. It was 11.30am; a time when students fill the streets on their way home from school.
All of a sudden I heard massive explosions, one after the other.
The windows in my bedroom began to shake violently.
I jumped out of bed and tried to turn the TV on, but there was no electricity. I ran around frantically, not knowing what to do.
The explosions grew stronger and sounded closer. I went to my front door and looked up at the sky. It was filled with black smoke.
While I was searching for people to find out what was going on, someone told me: "The Israeli jets are targeting all police buildings and the homes of Hamas leaders."
I later realised that the explosions I had heard was the Al Abbas police station, 300 metres from my home, being targeted.
The first thing that came to my mind was to call my wife and to check that my two young children were okay. They had spent the night in Khan Younis, in the south of Gaza, with my wife's family. But the mobile network was down. After 20 minutes of desperate attempts to reach them, I finally talked to my wife who told me that they were very scared but okay.
She was crying down the phone to me while watching TV. She said she could see images of dead bodies and that more than 50 people had already been killed.
At least now I knew that my wife and children were alive. But what about my three sisters and their children? I eventually reached one of my sisters who started to cry - she still did not know where her children were. An hour later they made it home - scared but unhurt.
State of shock
As I stood outside my home in a state of shock, I heard women screaming next door. People were running around, crying "Mohammed has been killed".
Mohammed Habboush was my 26-year-old neighbour. I felt sad because I knew the guy well.
An hour later, I got a message on my mobile telling me that another friend had been killed.
My family returned from Khan Younis in the evening. I felt so relieved to see them.
We all sat together in front of the television just crying and feeling afraid after every explosion. I tried to pretend that I was fine in order to make my family feel some sort of security, but deep inside I was afraid.
At 11pm my wife's mobile rang. It was a recorded voice message from the Israeli army which said: "If you have any kind of weapon in your home, you should evacuate your home immediately as we will target it."
At first I told my wife that we should not worry because we don't own any weapons. However, ten minutes later, my father who lives above us, called to say that he had received the same message. At that moment I started to panic.'
