In contrast to the standard conception of the media as cantankerous, obstinate, and ubiquitous in their search for truth and their independence of authority, we have spelled out and applied a propaganda model that indeed sees the media as serving a ‘societal purpose,’ but not that of enabling the public to assert meaningful control over the political process by providing them with the information needed for the intelligent discharge of political responsibilities. On the contrary, a propaganda model suggests that the ‘societal purpose’ of the media is to inculcate and defend the economic, social, and political agenda of privileged groups that dominate the domestic society and the state. The media serve this purpose in many ways: through selection of topics, distribution of concerns, framing of issues, filtering of information, emphasis and tone, and by keeping debate within the bounds of acceptable premises.

Critics on the left such as Marilyn Young and Howard Zinn have argued that American history is so morally flawed, citing slavery, civil rights and social welfare issues, that it cannot be an exemplar of virtue. Zinn argues that American exceptionalism cannot be of divine origin because it was not benign, especially when dealing with Native Americans.
Donald E. Pease mocks American exceptionalism as a 'state fantasy' and a 'myth' in his 2009 book The New American Exceptionalism. Pease notes that 'state fantasies cannot altogether conceal the inconsistencies they mask,' showing how such events as the revelations of prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib and the exposure of government incompetence after Hurricane Katrina 'opened fissures in the myth of exceptionalism.'
American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr argued that the automatic assumption, that America acts for the good, will bring about moral corruption. However Niebuhr did support the nation's Cold War policies. His position (called 'Christian Realism') advocated a liberal notion of responsibility that justified interference in other nations.

Afghaanse slachtoffers die niet 'embedded' waren.

Double standards
U.S. historians like Thomas Bender 'try and put an end to the recent revival of American exceptionalism, a defect he esteems to be inherited from the Cold War.' Gary W. Reichard and Ted Dickson argue 'how the development of the United States has always depended on its transactions with other nations for commodities, cultural values and populations.' Roger Cohen asks, 'How exceptional can you be when every major problem you face, from terrorism to nuclear proliferation to gas prices, requires joint action?' Harold Koh distinguishes 'distinctive rights, different labels, the flying buttress mentality, and double standards. […] [T]he fourth face—double standards—presents the most dangerous and destructive form of American exceptionalism.' Godfrey Hodgson also concludes that 'the US national myth is dangerous.' Samantha Power asserts that 'we're neither the shining example, nor even competent meddlers. It's going to take a generation or so to reclaim American exceptionalism.'

Following a trend set in recent years, references to "American exceptionalism" were common in 2012 and may remain a recurrent theme of US politics in the Obama era. Republicans have notably equated the concept with faith in the United States' superiority. During the presidential race, Mitt Romney argued that "America is not destined to be one of several equally balanced global powers" because "God" wants it to lead the world. Romney insisted that, unlike Barack Obama, he believes in 'American exceptionalism,' by which he meant that America is "the greatest nation in the history of the world and a force for good." Romney framed his campaign as a defense of America's 'exceptional' character against an unpatriotic president who "thinks America's just another nation" and who wants it to become "a European-style entitlement society."

The Republicans' focus on 'American exceptionalism' was premised on the notion that Obama denied that America is a special country. In fact, Obama's speeches have routinely echoed the idea that Americans are an extraordinary people. He has even asserted that America is the "greatest nation on Earth."

In his speech on Syria, President Obama claimed, 'the United States has been the anchor of global security' for the last seven decades. We doubt many of the people of the world would describe the United States in that way after suffering numerous military attacks, wars, military coups and now drone bombings at the hands of the United States. For many, the United States has caused great insecurity, killed or imprisoned loved ones and undermined democracy, self-determination and a fair economy.

I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.

'Kill Team' Morlock trophy image — lifting the dead boys head by his hair.

U.S. soldiers in Bravo Company stationed near Kandahar in a war game they were playing took it upon themselves to kill an unarmed Afghanistan boy.
The Kill team did this January 15th 2010.
Gul Mudin, a young teenager, lived in the village of La Mohammad Kalay, Afghanistan.
Sworn statements have two soldiers Corporal Jeremy Morlock and Private First Class Andrew Holmes engaged in staging the killing so that it would appear that the US soldiers had been under attack.
The statements read that they ordered the boy to stand still, then they tossed a grenade at him and opened fire with their weapons while they remained behind a mud wall.
Holmes's lawyer states that Holmes fired his weapon as ordered but missed, and that the photos in question reveal the victim was likely killed by wounds inflicted by a grenade or other weapons than the kind of automatic weapon Holmes was carrying at the time.
The lawyer said his client only posed with the corpse because he was ordered to do so.
At his original Article 32 hearing in November 2010 Holmes then aged 20 professed his innocence directly to the presiding officer, declaring:   "I want to tell you soldier to soldier that I did not commit murder."
The dead body of the boy, Gul Mudin is seen here lying by the wall where he was killed.

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
En zoals W.B. Yeats in 1920 zijn gedicht The Second Coming eindigde:
The darkness drops again but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?
Zo is
The Treason of the Intellectuals:
Our age is indeed the age of the intellectual organization of political hatreds. It will be one of its chief claims to notice in the moral history of humanity… All these passions of today… have discovered a ‘historical law,’ according to which their movement is merrely carrying out the spirit of history and must therefore necessarily triumph, while the opposing party is running counter to this spirit and can enjoy only a transitory triumph. That is merely the old desire to have Fate on one’s side, but it is put forth in a scientific shape. And this brings us to the second novelty: Today all political ideologies claim to be founded on science, to be the result of a ‘precise observation of facts.’ We all know what self-assurance, what rigidity, what inhumanity … are given to these passions today by this claim.

To summarize: Today political passions show a degree of universality, of coherence, of homogeneousness, of precision, of continuity, of preponderance, in relation to other passions, unknown until our times. They have become conscious of themselves to an extent never seen before. Some of them, hitherto scarcely avowed, have awakened to consciousness and have joined the old passions. Others have become more purely passionate than ever, possess men’s hearts in moral regions they never before reached, and have acquired a mystic character which had disappeared for centuries. All are furnished with an apparatus of ideology whereby, in the name of science, they proclaim the supreme value of their action and its historical necessity. On the surface and in the depths, in spatial values and in inner strength, political passions have today reached a point of perfection never before known in history. The present age is essentially the age of politics.

In 1996 the International Court of Justice (ICJ) gave an advisory opinion on the 'legality of the threat or use of nuclear weapons.' This made it clear, in paragraphs 54, 55 and 56, that international law on poisonous weapons—the Second Hague Declaration of 29 July 1899, Hague Convention IV of 18 October 1907 and the Geneva Protocol of 17 June 1925—did not cover nuclear weapons, because their prime or exclusive use was not to poison or asphyxiate. This ICJ opinion was about nuclear weapons, but the sentence 'The terms have been understood, in the practice of States, in their ordinary sense as covering weapons whose prime, or even exclusive, effect is to poison or asphyxiate,' also removes depleted uranium weaponry from coverage by the same treaties as their primary use is not to poison or asphyxiate, but to destroy materiel and kill soldiers through kinetic energy.
The Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities of the United Nations Human Rights Commission, passed two motions — the first in 1996 and the second in 1997. They listed weapons of mass destruction, or weapons with indiscriminate effect, or of a nature to cause superfluous injury or unnecessary suffering and urged all states to curb the production and the spread of such weapons. Included in the list was weaponry containing depleted uranium. The committee authorized a working paper, in the context of human rights and humanitarian norms, of the weapons.
The requested UN working paper was delivered in 2002 by Y. K. J. Yeung Sik Yuen in accordance with Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights resolution 2001/36. He argues that the use of DU in weapons, along with the other weapons listed by the Sub‑Commission, may breach one or more of the following treaties: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Charter of the United Nations, the Genocide Convention, the United Nations Convention Against Torture, the Geneva Conventions including Protocol I, the Convention on Conventional Weapons of 1980, and the Chemical Weapons Convention. Yeung Sik Yuen writes in Paragraph 133 under the title 'Legal compliance of weapons containing DU as a new weapon':
Annex II to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material 1980 (which became operative on 8 February 1997) classifies DU as a category II nuclear material. Storage and transport rules are set down for that category which indicates that DU is considered sufficiently "hot" and dangerous to warrant these protections. But since weapons containing DU are relatively new weapons no treaty exists yet to regulate, limit or prohibit its use. The legality or illegality of DU weapons must therefore be tested by recourse to the general rules governing the use of weapons under humanitarian and human rights law which have already been analysed in Part I of this paper, and more particularly at paragraph 35 which states that parties to Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions of 1949 have an obligation to ascertain that new weapons do not violate the laws and customs of war or any other international law. As mentioned, the International Court of Justice considers this rule binding customary humanitarian law.
Louise Arbour, chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia led a committee of staff lawyers to investigate possible treaty prohibitions against the use of DU in weapons. Their findings were that:
There is no specific treaty ban on the use of DU projectiles. There is a developing scientific debate and concern expressed regarding the impact of the use of such projectiles and it is possible that, in future, there will be a consensus view in international legal circles that use of such projectiles violate general principles of the law applicable to use of weapons in armed conflict. No such consensus exists at present.

Iraqi population

Since 2001, medical personnel at the Basra hospital in southern Iraq have reported a sharp increase in the incidence of child leukemia and genetic malformation among babies born in the decade following the Gulf War. Iraqi doctors attributed these malformations to possible long-term effects of DU, an opinion that was echoed by several newspapers. In 2004, Iraq had the highest mortality rate due to leukemia of any country. In 2003, the Royal Society called for Western militaries to disclose where and how much DU they had used in Iraq so that rigorous, and hopefully conclusive, studies could be undertaken out in affected areas. The International Coalition to Ban Uranium Weapons (ICBUW) likewise urged that an epidemiological study be made in the Basra region, as asked for by Iraqi doctors, but no peer-reviewed study has yet been undertaken in Basra.

A medical survey, 'CancerInfant Mortality and Birth Sex Ratio in Fallujah, Iraq 2005–2009' published in July 2010, states that the 'Increase in cancer and birth defects…are alarmingly high' and that infant mortality 2009/2010 has reached 13.6%. The group compares the dramatic increase, five years after the actual war 2004, or exposure, with the lymphoma Italian peacekeepers developed after the Balkan wars, and the increased cancer risk in certain parts of Sweden due to the Chernobyl fallout. The origin and time of introduction of the carcinogenic agent causing thegenetic stress, the group will address in a separate report.
Four studies in the second half of 2012—one of which described the people of Fallujah as having 'the highest rate of genetic damage in any population ever studied'—renewed calls for the US and UK to investigate the possible links between their military assault on the city in 2004 and the explosion in deformities, cancers, and other serious health problems, even though no depleted uranium was found in soil samples taken from Fallujah.

'NATO Countries Unleashed Nationalism And Fear in Ukraine'

RPI academic advisor, Prof. Mark Almond, explains how the US and its NATO allies are suddenly realizing that they have unleashed a force in western Ukraine that is highly destabliizing, with the repeal of the language law and the repeal of the law banning Nazi symbols being the early legislation passed by the US-backed group in control in Kiev. Panic is setting in the West.

Said Almond:
Suddenly the whole mood music from Washington, from London, from Brussels, even from Warsaw, is to say reach out to the Russian population, reach out to the Jewish population that is fearful of this radical neo-Nazi type rhetoric and stormtrooper squads roaming the streets in some of the cities of Ukraine. They have realized that the coup that overthrew Yanukovich has not been the end of the drama, but only the first act.

It is the sign of a rather childish, almost unbelievably incompetent attitude on the part of the NATO countries that they facilitated this crisis without thinking through what would happen. That you are unleashing forces of nationalism, of fear, that can become uncontrollable.

http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2014/03/05/220240/did-angela-merkel-really-say-putin.html
