Daar zit iets in.

In werkelijkheid schreef 'the imperial messenger' Thomas Friedman in de New York Times:

given the disarray in Yemen, Iraq and Syria, do we really care if Iran tries to play policeman there and is embroiled in endless struggles with Sunni militias? For 10 years, it was America that was overstretched across Iraq and Afghanistan. Now it will be Iran’s turn. I feel terrible for the people who have to live in these places, and we certainly should use American air power to help prevent the chaos from spreading to islands of decency like Jordan, Lebanon and Kurdistan in Iraq. But managing the decline of the Arab state system is not a problem we should own. We’ve amply proved that we don’t know how.

In zijn bekendste boek The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers: Economic Change and Military Conflict from 1500 to 2000 geeft hij de volgende beschrijving:

From the Civil War to the first half of the 20th century, the United States' economy benefited from high agricultural production, plentiful raw materials, technological advancements and financial inflows. During this time the U.S. did not have to contend with foreign dangers. From 1860 to 1914, U.S. exports increase sevenfold and result in huge trading surpluses. By 1945, the U.S.' economy enjoyed both high productivity and was the only major industrialized nation intact after World War II. From the 1960s onwards, the U.S. saw a relative decline in its share of world production and trade. By the 1980s, the U.S. experienced declining exports of agricultural and manufacturing goods. In the space of a few years, the U.S. went from being the largest creditor to the largest debtor nation. At the same time the federal debt was growing at an increasing pace. This situation is typical of declining hegemons.

The United States has the typical problems of a great power which include balancing guns and butter and investments for economic growth. The U.S.' growing military commitment to every continent (other than the Antarctica) and the growing cost of military hardware severely limits available options. The author compares the U.S.' situation to Great Britain's prior to World War I. He comments that the map of U.S. bases is similar to Great Britain's before World War I.

As the military expenses grow this reduces the investments in economic growth, which eventually 'leads to the downward spiral of slower growth, heavier taxes, deepening domestic splits over spending priorities, and weakening capacity to bear the burdens of defense.' Mr. Kennedy's advice is as follows.

The task facing American statesmen over the next decades, therefore, is to recognize that broad trends are under way, and that there is a need to 'manage' affairs so that the relative erosion of the United States' position takes place slowly and smoothly, and is not accelerated by policies which bring merely short-term advantage but longer-term disadvantage.

Just prior to President Obama's 2014 State of the Union Address, media reported that the top wealthiest 1% possess 40% of the nation’s wealth; the bottom 80% own 7%; similarly, but later, the media reported, the 'richest 1 percent in the United States now own more wealth than the bottom 90 percent.' The gap between the top 10% and the middle class is over 1,000%; that increases another 1000% for the top 1%. The average employee 'needs to work more than a month to earn what the CEO earns in one hour.

[The Allies] might be too polite to tell the US straight up – 'Look, you have $18.1 trillion in official debt, you have $42 trillion in unfunded liabilities, and you’re kind of a dick. I’m dumping you.'

So instead they’re going with the 'it’s not you, it’s me' approach.

But to anyone paying attention, it’s pretty obvious where this trend is going.

It won’t be long before other western nations jump on the anti-dollar bandwagon with action and not just words.
*  *  *
Bottom line: this isn’t theory or conjecture anymore. Every shred of objective evidence suggests that the dollar’s dominance is coming to an end.

Cracks In Washington’s Empire

Washington’s EU vassals might be finding their backbone. Britain, Germany, France, and Italy are reported to have defied Washington’s orders and applied to join the Chinese-led Asian Investment Bank. Australia, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland and Luxembourg might also join.

Washington uses its development banks such as the Asian Development Bank, the World Bank, along with the IMF, in order to exercise financial and political hegemony. These banks are crucial elements of American economic and political imperialism.

The Chinese-led bank will, of course, be much more effective. The Chinese will use the bank to actually help countries and thereby make friends and grow trust, whereas Washington uses its banks for domination by force.
This new bank, together with the BRICS Bank, will provide countries with escape routes from Washington’s domination.

The Evil Empire is beginning to crack. It will crack more as the Russian-Chinese alliance unfolds its potentials and when European capitals understand that hegemonic Washington has put their existence at risk in order to try to prevent Russia’s rise. The crazed American and British neocon nazis, and their dupes among the populations, comprise the greatest human threat that the world has ever known. The sooner the Evil Empire collapses, the safer the world will be.

Here is the report:

Over the course of 2014, Chinese banks granted a total of 22.1 billion dollars in loans to Latin America, in accordance with data published by Inter-American Dialogue [1]. In light of the downturn of the world economy and the increase of geopolitical tensions, China has been obligated to strengthen their bonds with countries that possess abundant natural resources (oil, gas, metals, minerals, water, biodiversity etc.)

Although ICBC and Bank of China also participated in the granting of loans, almost all loans were granted by China Development Bank and China Ex-Im Bank. Despite the fact that loans of less than 50 million dollars were not taken into account, the reported number is an increase of more than 70% in comparison to the loans granted in 2013, which were 12.9 billion dollars in total…

Immers 'The truth of the matter is: Iran’s defense budget is $30 billion. Our defense budget is closer to $600 billion. Iran understands that they cannot fight us,' aldus president Obama zelf.

Daar zit iets in.

Allereerst Friedman zelf.

Sooner or later, Mr. Bush argued, sanctions would force Mr. Hussein's generals to bring him down, and then Washington would have the best of all worlds: an iron-fisted Iraqi junta without Saddam Hussein.

The hidden hand of the market will never work without a hidden fist. McDonald's cannot flourish without McDonnell Douglas, the designer of the F-15. And the hidden fist that keeps the world safe for Silicon Valley's technologies to flourish is called the US Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps.
A Manifesto for the Fast World.’ New York Times. March 28, 1999.

The historical debate is over. The answer is free-market capitalism.
The Lexus and the Olive Tree: Understanding Globalization.  May 2, 2000.

We needed to go over there, basically, and take out a very big stick right in the heart of that world and burst that bubble… What they [Muslims] needed to see was American boys and girls going house to house from Basra to Baghdad and basically saying ‘Which part of this sentence don't you understand? You don't think we care about our open society? You think this bubble fantasy, we're just going to let it grow? Well, suck on this!’ That, Charlie, is what this war was about. We could have hit Saudi Arabia! It was part of that bubble. We could have hit Pakistan. We hit Iraq because we could.
Charlie Rose (30 May 2003).

I was speaking out in Minnesota — my hometown, in fact — and a guy stood up in the audience, said, ‘Mr. Friedman, is there any free trade agreement you’d oppose?’ I said, ‘No, absolutely not.’ I said, ‘You know what, sir? I wrote a column supporting the CAFTA, the Caribbean Free Trade initiative. I didn’t even know what was in it. I just knew two words: free trade.’
Meet the Press (23 July 2006), referring to the Central American Free Trade Agreement.

Laatst genoemde

Voor de doorsnee Nederlandse mainstream-pers geldt dat het van 'optimisme' getuigt wanneer opiniemaker Thomas Friedman fascistische opvattingen ventileert als 'We needed to go over there, basically, and take out a very big stick right in the heart of that world and burst that bubble,' en 'The hidden hand of the market will never work without a hidden fist.' Zo schreef de Amerikaanse ‘political journalist, best-selling author and syndicated newspaper columnist,’ David Sirota in 2009 over Friedman onder kop: An Idiot's Guide to Tom Friedman's Idiocy het volgende:

Tom Friedman may be the single stupidest figure in American public life, and certainly is the stupidest writer with such a large platform. I don't mean that he's wrong on everything (although he is substantively wrong on a lot of things) — I mean that he's actually an extremely dim bulb in that he displays a stunning lack of basic cognitive function. Specifically, he shows almost zero ability to realize that the arguments made by Tom Friedman often undermine the arguments made by Tom Friedman.

In 2011 verscheen hierover boek, geschreven door Belén Fernández, ‘editor and feature writer.’ Thomas Friedman At Work.

Factual errors, ham-fisted analysis, and contradictory assertions—compounded by a penchant for mixed metaphors and name-dropping—distinguish the work of Pulitzer Prize–winning New York Times columnist and author Thomas Friedman. The Imperial Messenger reveals the true value of this media darling, a risible writer whose success tells us much about the failures of contemporary journalism. Belén Fernández dissects the Friedman corpus with wit and journalistic savvy to expose newsroom practices that favor macho rhetoric over serious inquiry, a pacified readership over an empowered one, and reductionist analysis over integrity.

No two countries that both had McDonald's had fought a war against each other since each got its McDonald's.

the striking thing about greenhouse gases is the diversity of sources that emit them. A herd of cattle belching can be worse than highway full of hummers.

pronouncements like the following on behalf of humanity: ‘Three United States are better than one, and five would be better than three.’ Not suprinsingly, Friedman does not respond favorably when elements of humanity fail to internalize the aspirations he has assigned them, resulting in anthropological revelations such as that one of the impedements to freedom in the Arab world is ‘the wall in the Arab mind.’ Friedman explains in 2003 that ‘I hit my head against that wall’ while conversing with Egyptian journalists who ‘could see nothing good coming from the U.S. “occupation” of Iraq’ and who are thus written off as proponents of ‘Saddamism.’

Vele jaren lang maakte Friedman het Amerikaanse publiek rijp voor de illegale 'shock and awe'-inval in Irak, zoals Fernández laat zien:

As for Frieman’s speculation in a 1997 column that ‘Saddam Hussein is the reason God created cruise missiles,’ this is not entirely reconcilable with his suggestion in the very same article that Saddam be eliminated via ‘a head shot’ – not generally a setting on such weaponry.

En dat komt omdat, net als met Mak’s reisboek, ‘Friedman’s writing is characterized by a reduction of complex international phenomena to simplistic rhetoric and theorems that rarely withstand the test of reality.’ Bovendien storen Mak en Hofland zich ook niet aan Friedman’s ‘blatantly racist generalization, such as that suicide bombing in Israel indicates a ‘collective madness’ on the part of the Palestinians, who Friedman has determined it is permissible to refer to collectively as ‘Ahmed.’

No policy is sustainable without a public that broadly understands why it's necessary and sees the world the way you do...

That Friedman may also view the world in terms of excess demographics is implied by his conviction that the Israeli slaughter of 1,200 people in Lebanon constitutes ‘the education of Hezbollah,’ his hope  for a similar ‘education of Hamas’ in Gaza, and his infinite justifications for the mutilation of Iraq, such as this post-invasion pronouncement: ‘America sliced right through Iraq. It did so because we are a free-market democracy that is capable of amassing huge amounts of technical power.’

As much as I believe we did good and right in toppling Saddam, I will whoop it up only when the Iraqi people are really free – not free just to loot or to protest against us, but free to praise us out loud, free to speak their minds in any direction.

De Amerikaanse freelance journalist Nir Rosen beschreef in 2011 over de ‘Western media fraud in the Middle East’ en hoe ‘too many journalists report official narratives of the powerful, missing the stories of working class people.’ Rosen waarschuwde:

American reporting is problematic throughout the third world, but because the American military/industrial/financial/academic/media complex is so directly implicated in the Middle East, the consequences of such bad reporting are more significant. Journalists end up serving as propagandists [who] justify the killing of innocent people instead of [a] voice for those innocent people.

The Obama administration claims its use of lethal force, including with drones, is 'legal,' 'ethical,' and 'wise.' But Amnesty International is gravely concerned that the administration is killing people outside the bounds of human rights and the law.
International law permits the use of lethal force in very restricted circumstances. But from the little information made available to the public, U.S. drone strike policy appears to allow extrajudicial executions in violation of the right to life, virtually anywhere in the world.
Public outcry over the killer drone program is growing, leading to President Obama and Congress addressing the issue. Despite all the talk that new laws, rules or a 'kill court' are needed, the solution is simple: the Obama administration must follow the law. Congress and the courts must hold them to it.
Urge the U.S. government to follow international law that restricts the use of lethal force.
http://www.amnestyusa.org/our-work/issues/security-and-human-rights/drones

Op hun eigen specifieke wijze zorgen de massamedia en bestseller-auteurs als Mak voor de verspreiding van ‘an ahistorical and counterfactual reality according to which, for example, corporate globalization constitutes the panacea for the very ills it creates,’ aldus de conclusie van Belén Fernández in haar rijkelijk gedocumenteerde studie.

His ideological strategy appears to be that of selective admission of fault can strengthen imperial moral authority -- if the business of America remains business acknowledging occasional missteps can repair and even enhance the company’s reputation. If Obama’s confession of American sins can charm international opinion – witness the starstruck and credulous silence of dignitaries at Oslo – then the present imperial structures can persist under cover of a promise to be wiser. Thus President Obama can speak, with a pride born of historical amnesia, of ‘an architecture of institutions – from the United Nations to NATO to the World Bank – that provide for the common security and prosperity of human beings.’ And thus does Obama’s American Century end in a Civilization of Business.

Obama’s fulsome homilies enable Americans to postpone an inevitable disenchantment with their ‘blessed way of life,’ for the decline of imperial hegemony will be the pivotal episode of the twenty-first century. The horsemen of this apocalypse are already visible and galloping at an accelerating speed, with mounting levels of personal, corporate, and government debt; military overextension that cannot be sustained without unpopular conscription, further fiscal indenture, and greater damage to an already disfigured world image; ecological destruction whose repair is routinely subordinated to the imperatives of business; and an economy whose injustice and indignity become ever more glaring and pernicious. Still profoundly enchanted by empire as a way of life, Americans and their leaders may try – with pecuniary ingenuity and perhaps with great violence – to prolong the imperium of consumption. Yet even if they appear to succeed their victory will be brief an pyrrhic, for they will have purchased their triumph in the currency of fear, denial, and death. In the end, other peoples – perhaps even many Americans themselves – will not abide the expenditure in money and lives required to extend the American Century. With a degree of rudeness directly proportional to the level of our evasion, we will discover that our way of life is neither charmed nor nonnegotiable.

Kennelijk vergeef, want een jaar later schreef Vicki Divoll, 'a former general counsel to the Senate Select Committe on Intelligence' onder de kop 'Who says you can kill Americans, Mr. President?' in de International Herald Tribune van vrijdag 18 januari 2013:

It is not just the most recent president, this one and the next whom we need to worry about when it comes to improper exercise of power. It is every president. Mr. Obama should declassify and release, to Congress, the press and the public, documents that set forth the detailed constitutional and statutory analysis he relies on for targeting and killing American citizens.

Four Years After Gaddafi, Libya Is a Failed State

Nearly four years after NATO-backed rebels toppled the former Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi, the North Africa country has plunged into chaotic unrest.
The failure of last year’s election to achieve political unity in Libya was most evident when Fajr Libya, or “Libya Dawn” — a diverse coalition of armed groups that includes an array of Islamist militias — rejected the election’s outcome and seized control of Tripoli. The internationally recognized government relocated to Tobruk, situated in eastern Libya along the Mediterranean coast near the Egyptian border, while Libya Dawn set up a rival government, known as the new General National Congress, in the capital.
As forces aligned with the Tobruk government have fought Libya Dawn, the conflict has gradually become internationalized. Egypt and the United Arab Emirates have launched air strikes targeting Libya Dawn, while Turkey, Qatar, and Sudan are believed to have provided the Islamist-dominated coalition with varying degrees of support.
The emergence of Daesh (the so-called “Islamic State”) in strategically vital areas of Libya has further complicated the conflict in Africa’s most oil-rich country and raised security concerns in nearby states.
Libya’s Most Polarizing General
The mercurial general Khalifa Belqasim Haftar has emerged as an influential, yet highly divisive, leader in this bloody conflict.
In early March, the anti-Islamist general was appointed commander of the armed forces loyal to the Tobruk government. Haftar’s role in the former Gaddafi regime, his cozy relationship with Washington, and suspicions about his long-term ambitions have given him a controversial reputation among many Libyans. Nonetheless, he’s also gaining respect from those who share his vitriol for Islamists.
Haftar was an early Gaddafi loyalist, and played an important role as one of the “Free Officers” in the 1969 revolution that toppled the monarchy led by King Idris al-Sanusi. Gaddafi later said that Haftar “was my son… and I was like his spiritual father.” It was the start of a military career in which Haftar fought on many different sides.
During the Arab-Israeli war of 1973, Haftar led a Libyan battalion. Later, as a commander of Libyan forces in the country’s 1980-1987 war with Chad, he was allegedly responsible for war crimes when his forces were accused of using napalm and poison gas.
In 1987, the Chadian military scored a major victory in the battle of Wadi al-Doum. In addition to killing more than 1,000 Libyan forces, Chad took over 400 Libyans, including Haftar, as prisoners.
Around that time, Haftar’s loyalties shifted.
While held in Chad, Haftar worked with other Libyan officers to coordinate a coup against Gaddafi, before the United States secured his release — by airlifting him and 300 of his men to Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), and from there to Virginia.
As a newly minted U.S. citizen, Haftar lived in northern Virginia from 1990 to 2011, spending part of this time working with the CIA before returning to Libya in March 2011 to fight once again against the Gaddafi regime. Several sources insist that Haftar was out of the CIA’s hands by 2011, but others maintain that the U.S. government orchestrated his return to Libya that year.
Libya’s Civil War
Last year, Haftar called for the unilateral dissolution of Libya’s parliament and the establishment of a “presidential committee” to rule the country until new elections were held. Haftar cited Libya’s “upheaval” as justification for the armed forces to take over.
Many saw his act as an attempted military coup aimed at crushing the Muslim Brotherhood, which had won second place in Libya’s 2012 elections. Prime Minister Ali Zeidan dismissed his announcement as “ridiculous”.
Although many in Libya’s government viewed him as a rogue general hungry for power, his ongoing campaign against Islamist forces has gradually won him supporters. Last May, Haftar waged a campaign called “Operation Dignity” to “eliminate extremist terrorist groups” in the country. Since then, the Tobruk-based government has by and large come to support the general, viewing him as the government’s best bet in the struggle against its Islamist enemies.
Haftar’s anti-Islamist crusade parallels that of Egyptian President Abdel Fatah el-Sisi, who is presiding over a crackdown on Egypt’s Islamists. In making no distinction between so-called moderate Islamists like the Muslim Brotherhood and hardline factions such as Daesh and Ansar al-Sharia (an al-Qaeda affiliate), Haftar and Sisi are both selling a narrative to the West that their anti-Islamist positions are in sync with the “global war on terror.”
So far, Haftar has been unwilling to negotiate with Libya Dawn — which contains the Libyan Muslim Brotherhood’s political wing and the “Loyalty to Martyrs” bloc within its coalition. In turn, Libya Dawn refuses to negotiate with Haftar.
The United Nations has begun hosting talks in Morocco between Libya’s various political factions in an effort to unite them against the growing threat of Daesh. Unfortunately, the UN’s efforts to push Libya’s two governments toward dialogue is undermined by the low levels of trust between them, and their mutual belief that only through continued armed struggle can they secure more territory and resources. Indeed, with strong backing from Cairo and Abu Dhabi, Haftar is likely convinced that he can make greater gains through warfare than diplomacy.
The toxic legacy of Gaddafi’s divisive and authoritarian regime, which pitted Libya’s diverse factions against one another, has plagued the prospects for any central authority gaining widespread legitimacy in the war-torn country. Indeed, since he was overthrown in 2011, Libya has turned into a cauldron of anarchy, with little meaningful security existing outside of Tripoli and Benghazi.
Gaddafi’s regime harshly oppressed the Islamist groups that went on to form Libya Dawn, which views its rise to power in Tripoli as hard fought and a long time in coming. They view Haftar as a war criminal from the ancien regime committed to their elimination, which will certainly undermine the potential for Libya’s two governments to reach a meaningful power-sharing agreement. With no peace in sight, a continuation of the bloody stalemate between the Tobruk and Tripoli-based governments seems most likely.
International Implications of Libya’s Turmoil
The fall of Gaddafi launched a geopolitical tsunami across Africa and into the Middle East.
Libya is now home to the world’s largest loose arms cache, and its porous borders are routinely transited by a host of heavily armed non-state actors — including the Tuareg separatists and jihadists who forced Mali’s national military from Timbuktu and Gao in March 2012 with newly acquired weapons from Libya. The UN has also documented the flow of arms from Libya into EgyptGazaNigerSomalia, and Syria.
Last October, 800 fighters loyal to Daesh seized control of Derna near the Egyptian border, some 200 miles from the European Union. Since then, Daesh’s Libyan branch has taken controlof Sirte and gained a degree of influence in Benghazi, the nation’s second largest city and heart of the 2011 uprising against Gaddafi.
The group’s use of Libyan territory to terrorize and threaten other states has raised the international stakes. In February, Daesh beheaded 21 migrant workers from Egypt because they were Coptic Christians, then released a propaganda video containing footage of the heinous act. That lured Egypt into waging direct air strikes against the group’s targets in Derna.
Last November, Ansar Bait al-Maqdis — the dominant jihadist group in the Egyptian Sinai —pledged allegiance to Daesh, as did Nigeria’s Boko Haram more recently. Daesh has also made direct threats against Italy, prompting officials in Rome to warn that Italy’s military may intervene in Libya to counter Daesh’s fighters.
One quarter of Daesh’s fighters in Derna come from other Arab countries and Afghanistan. A major influx of Jabhat al-Nusra fighters from Syria have also entered the fray in Libya, underscoring how Islamist extremists from lands far away have exploited Libya’s status as a failed state. This development was most recently underscored when a Sudanese member of Daesh’s Libya division carried out a suicide attack on April 5th, which targeted a security checkpoint near Misrata. The bloody incident resulted in four deaths and over 20 injuries.
The number of weak or failing states across Africa suggests that such international networks will continue to take advantage of frail central authorities and lawlessness throughout the extremely underdeveloped Sahel and other areas of the continent to spread their influence. In the absence of any political resolution to its civil war, Libya in particular — as a failed state with mountainous oil reserves — will remain vulnerable to extremist forces hoping to seize power amidst the ongoing morass.
