Nostalgia, that's what we want... the good ol' days... when we gave'em hell. When the buck stopped somewhere and you could still buy something with it.

The idea concerns the fact that this country wants nostalgia. They want to go back as far as they can – even if it's only as far as last week. Not to face now or tomorrow, but to face backwards. And yesterday was the day of our cinema heroes riding to the rescue at the last possible moment. The day of the man in the white hat or the man on the white horse - or the man who always came to save America at the last moment – someone always came to save America at the last moment – especially in 'B' movies. And when America found itself having a hard time facing the future, they looked for people like John Wayne. But since John Wayne was no longer available, they settled for Ronald Reagan – and it has placed us in a situation that we can only look at – like a 'B' movie...

Nostalgia, that's what we want... the good ol' days... when we gave'em hell. When the buck stopped somewhere and you could still buy something with it. To a time when movies were in black and white – and so was everything else...

So much for the good news...

As Wall Street goes, so goes the nation. And here's a look at the closing numbers – racism's up, human rights are down, peace is shaky, war items are hot - the House claims all ties. Jobs are down, money is scarce – and common sense is at an all-time low with heavy trading. Movies were looking better than ever and now no one is looking because, we're starring in a 'B' movie. And we would rather have John Wayne... we would rather have John Wayne.

In politics, a noble lie is a myth or untruth, often, but not invariably, of a religious nature, knowingly told by an elite to maintain social harmony or to advance an agenda. The noble lie is a concept originated by Plato as described in the Republic.

Plato presented the Noble Lie (γενναῖον ψεῦδος, gennaion pseudos) in a fictional tale, wherein Socrates provides the origin of the three social classes who compose the republic proposed by Plato; Socrates speaks of a socially stratified society, wherein the populace are told 'a sort of Phoenician tale':

'the earth, as being their mother, delivered them, and now, as if their land were their mother and their nurse, they ought to take thought for her and defend her against any attack, and regard the other citizens as their brothers and children of the self-same earth... While all of you, in the city, are brothers, we will say in our tale, yet god, in fashioning those of you who are fitted to hold rule, mingled gold in their generation, for which reason they are the most precious — but in the helpers, silver, and iron and brass in the farmers and other craftsmen. And, as you are all akin, though for the most part you will breed after your kinds, it may sometimes happen that a golden father would beget a silver son, and that a golden offspring would come from a silver sire, and that the rest would, in like manner, be born of one another. So that the first and chief injunction that the god lays upon the rulers is that of nothing else are they to be such careful guardians, and so intently observant as of the intermixture of these metals in the souls of their offspring, and if sons are born to them with an infusion of brass or iron they shall by no means give way to pity in their treatment of them, but shall assign to each the status due to his nature and thrust them out among the artisans or the farmers. And again, if from these there is born a son with unexpected gold or silver in his composition they shall honor such and bid them go up higher, some to the office of guardian, some to the assistance-ship, alleging that there is an oracle that the city shall then be overthrown when the man of iron or brass is its guardian.

Socrates proposes and claims that if the people believed 'this myth... [it] would have a good effect, making them more inclined to care for the state and one another. This is his noble lie: 'a contrivance for one of those falsehoods that come into being in case of need, of which we were just now talking, some noble one...'

Modern views on noble lies...

Karl Popper accused Plato of trying to base religion on a noble lie as well. In The Open Society and Its Enemies, Popper remarks, 'It is hard to understand why those of Plato’s commentators who praise him for fighting against the subversive conventionalism of the Sophists, and for establishing a spiritual naturalism ultimately based on religion, fail to censure him for making a convention, or rather an invention, the ultimate basis of religion.' Religion for Plato is a noble lie, at least if we assume that Plato meant all of this sincerely, not cynically. Popper finds Plato's conception of religion to have been very influential in subsequent thought.

Leo Strauss noted that thinkers of the first rank, going back to Plato, had raised the problem of whether good and effective politicians could be completely truthful and still achieve the necessary ends of their society. By implication, Strauss asks his readers to consider whether it is true that noble lies have no role at all to play in uniting and guiding the polis. Are myths needed to give people meaning and purpose and to ensure a stable society? Or can men dedicated to relentlessly examining, in Nietzsche's language, those 'deadly truths,' flourish freely? Thus, is there a limit to the political, and what can be known absolutely? In The City and Man, Strauss discusses the myths outlined in Plato's Republic that are required for all governments. These include a belief that the state's land belongs to it even though it was likely acquired illegitimately and that citizenship is rooted in something more than the accidents of birth. Seymour Hersh also claims that Strauss endorsed noble lies: myths used by political leaders seeking to maintain a cohesive society. In The Power of Nightmares, documentary filmmaker Adam Curtis opines that 'Strauss believed it was for politicians to assert powerful and inspiring myths that everyone could believe in. They might not be true, but they were necessary illusions. One of these was religion; the other was the myth of the nation.'

We have about 50% of the world's wealth, but only 6.3% of its population. ... In this situation, we cannot fail to be the object of envy and resentment. Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity... To do so, we will have to dispense with all sentimentality and day-dreaming; and our attention will have to be concentrated everywhere on our immediate national objectives... We should cease to talk about vague and... unreal objectives such as human rights, the raising of the living standards, and democratization. The day is not far off when we are going to have to deal in straight power concepts. The less we are then hampered by idealistic slogans, the better.

Four decades of neoliberal policies have resulted in an economic Darwinism that promotes privatization, commodification, free trade, and deregulation. It privileges personal responsibility over larger social forces, reinforces the gap between the rich and poor by redistributing wealth to the most powerful and wealthy individuals and groups, and it fosters a mode of public pedagogy that privileges the entrepreneurial subject while encouraging a value system that promotes self-interest, if not an unchecked selfishness. Since the 1970s, neoliberalism or free-market fundamentalism has become not only a much-vaunted ideology that now shapes all aspects of life in the United States but also a predatory global phenomenon 'that drives the practices and principles of the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and World Trade Organization, trans-national institutions which largely determine the economic policies of developing countries and the rules of international trade.'

With its theater of cruelty and mode of public pedagogy, neoliberalism as a form of economic Darwinism attempts to undermine all forms of solidarity capable of challenging market-driven values and social relations, promoting the virtues of an unbridled individualism almost pathological in its disdain for community, social responsibility, public values, and the public good. As the welfare state is dismantled and spending is cut to the point where government becomes unrecognizable—except to promote policies that benefit the rich, corporations, and the defense industry—the already weakened federal and state governments are increasingly replaced by what João Biehl has called proliferating 'zones of social abandonment' and 'terminal exclusion,'

Boris and Svetlana were simple farmers back in the old Soviet era.
They grew grapes on Russia’s bountiful Caspian coast, dried them in the sun, and sold raisins according to the quotas set by the committee.
Every year the Soviet Union’s Raisin Administrative Committee (RAC) would regulate production, often ordering farmers to destroy upwards of 40% of their crop in order to achieve some sort of bizarre, contrived equilibrium.
This adherence to the religion of central planning in the Soviet Union was so severe that even after the wall fell they couldn’t quite manage to divorce themselves from it.
In his book ‘The Company of Strangers,’ British economist Paul Seabright recounts a hilarious conversation he had just a few weeks after the breakup of the Soviet Union.
Seabright was speaking to the former director of bread production in St. Petersburg, who said:
"Please understand that we are keen to move towards a market system. But we need to understand the fundamental details of how such a system works. Tell me, for example: who is in charge of the supply of bread to the population of London?”
Seabright explained, of course, that no one is in charge of such things.
In the West we don’t have centrally planned committees to regulate the supply of bread, raisin, milk, etc.
One would think.
But guess again, comrades.
Because Boris and Svetlana are actually Marvin and Laura Horne of Kerman, California.
And yes, the Raisin Administrative Committee really, truly does exist in the Land of the Free. I am not making this up.
This happens year after year: RAC bureaucrats centrally plan precisely how many raisins will be sold in the market.
All raisins exceeding that quota are confiscated and stockpiled by RAC, which in some years has amounted to as much as 47% of US raisin production.
Amazing.
Aside from the unconscionable conclusion that this constitutes outright theft, it also means that American consumers are paying more for groceries than they should be.
Naturally, raisins aren’t the only crops targeted by bureaucrats.
There’s the Potato Administrative Committee, Citrus Administrative Committee, and oodles of other New Deal-era committees to set food production quotas.
Marvin and Laura Horne really did take a stand.
About a decade ago they bucked the quota and took the bold step of selling all the raisins that they had grown.
And they really have been punished severely for it. The US Department of Agriculture assessed a $695,226.92 fine against the Hornes, not counting penalties, interest, and legal fees.
The Hornes took the matter to court. And believe it or not, this case has actually reached the Supreme Court.
But even there at the Pantheon of American Justice, the issue is still hotly contested.
It’s incredible that even the nation’s most enlightened legal scholars can’t unanimously see the absurdity (and unconstitutionality) of this system.
But it only serves as further proof of how far things have fallen in the Land of the Free.
Congress is there to create the most absurd, destructive, and invasive laws imaginable.
Executive agencies are standing by to cram them down your throat at gunpoint.
And the courts can’t even recognize when theft is theft.
Under such a heavy yoke, I would respectfully submit to the Hornes that there are a lot of places in the world to grow raisins.
Or run a business. Raise your children in the way that you want. Choose what you can/cannot put in your own body.
Or just about anything else.
And do so with much more freedom and comfort, never again having to worry about Big Brother, the national debt, or the next destructive regulation to come your way.

Until Tomorrow,
